The Sutherland Community Arts Initiative (SCAI) is presenting a birthday celebration of the music of trumpet great Miles Davis (b. May 26, 1926) as performed by keyboardist Robert “Baabi" Irving III, Miles' musical director from 1980-1988. Joining Mr. Irving for this concert is trumpeter Malachi Thompson, saxophonist Dennis Winslett, bassist Michael Manson and drummer Ernie Adams . This event will take place Saturday, May 20, 2000, at the Velvet Lounge located at 2128 1/2 S. Indiana Ave. The first shows begins at 10 PM. Call the Velvet Lounge at 312-791-9050.

Until the second coming of Michael Jordan, the most celebrated return to public life was that of Miles Davis. However it is a little known fact the music of composer/arranger Robert “Baabi" Irving III inspired Miles to pick up the horn and return to the stage. Irving produced Miles' come back CD, The Man With The Horn, Decoy (which was Downbeat's record of the year in 1984) and You're Under Arrest for Columbia records. Mr. Irving will be performing selections from those recordings along with other Davis favorites. For more information call 773-536-6555.
