The Dom Minasi Trio Celebrates New CD "Takin' The Duke Out" at The Jazz Gallery

Dom Minasi began his career in 1975 with two recordings for the Blue Note label, “When Joanna Loved Me" and “I Have A Feeling I've Been Here Before". In the intervening years, even though he did not record, he was active as a performer, teacher and clinician. He has performed with everybody from Buddy Rich, Chico Hamilton, Dave Brubeck, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Buddy Tate, George Coleman and most recently with Ernie Andrews (High Note). In 1999 he went back into the studio for the first time in 24 years releasing the critically acclaimed “Finishing Touches" CD for the CIMP label. “Finishing Touches" was followed by “Dialing Privileges" (also for CIMP) and features the alto saxophonist Blaise Siwula, a frequent collaborator. Dom's guitar style derives more from John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy and Cecil Taylor then from the expected sources generally attributed to jazz guitarists e.g., Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Raney, George Benson, et al. Minasi is more his own man eschewing Be Bop lines for more adventurous explorations. In his liner notes for Dom’s new CD “Takin' The Duke Out" (CDM 1001) Bill Millkowski says this about Dom's music:

There are a handful of guitarists -- Derek Bailey, James “Blood" Ulmer, Sonny Sharrock, Joe Morris, Fred Frith who have remained as defiantly, refreshingly unclinched over time as Dom Minasi. Imagine a composite of guitarist Johnny Smith and saxophonist Eric Dolphy and you’ve got a good idea of where Dom is coming from on his ax. Minasi’s phantasmagorical approach to Ellingtonia is at once disorienting and inspiring, reverential and rebellious. It embraces the tradition while flouting it.
