Ted Rosenthal Performs Concerto for Piano and Orchestra On Thursday December 19

Ted Rosenthal will be performing the New York City premiere of “The Survivor", a concerto he composed for jazz piano and orchestra. The performance, with the Manhattan Jazz Philharmonic (Justin DiCioccio, Conductor), takes place at 8 pm in Borden Auditorium at the Manhattan School of Music, 122nd St. and Broadway.

The concert is free and open to the public, with no tickets required.

“The Survivor" is a concerto in three movements that features the pianist in both the contemporary classical and jazz improvisational idioms. The piece incorporates the excitement and spontaneity of jazz improvisation and the jazz rhythm section within a tightly knit compositional work.

“The Survivor" draws its inspiration from the bittersweet experience of survival, alluding to survivors of personal and artistic struggles as well as survivors of great tragedies, most notably the Holocaust.

In this performance, the other members of the trio featured in the concerto are John Benitez, bass; Obed Calvaire, drums.

The program also includes a bass trombone concerto by Daniel Schnyder, with David Taylor, soloist; Dave Liebman's “The Lonliness of a Long Distance Runner," with Liebman and Phil Markowitz soloists, and “Black Sand Beach," by Mike Abene also featuring Dave Liebman.
