Optimist International Join Full Throttle in Concurrence

The popular musical series Concurrence continues in October, featuring rock band Optimist International and jazz band Full Throttle, October 3 at 8pm.
The series, curated by Don Alan of Radio Valencia fame and Kyle Statham, is a collaboration between alternative jazz and rock artists and strives to bring together a diverse group of local musicians and composers.
Concurrence will consist of a jazz performance by Full Throttle, featuring bassist and composer Adam Lane.
This will be followed by a rock performance by Optimist International, with Eli Crews on guitar, John Finkbeiner on bass and Oran Canfield on drums.
“The theory behind this is that there is a very dedicated audience to each of these styles of music in the Bay Area," said Concurrence curator Don Alan. “The audiences, however, rarely cross over. Through artistic interaction, Concurrence aims to cross artificial boundaries by bringing musicians from each of these groups together, and to open up new avenues for exploration for the audience."
Bassist and composer Adam Lane combines traditional skills with a fascination for modern electronic music, drawing comparisons as wide-ranging as Charles Mingus and Captain Beefheart. Having studied with master trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith in Los Angeles before heading north, Lane has recorded with a broad spectrum of artist, from avant-jazz stalwarts like John Tchicai to rock legend Tom Waits. His debut album as a leader, Hollywood Wedding (Cadence Jazz), has received overwhelming critical praise, with Signal to Noise calling Lane “an ambitious composer who clearly has the goods, one who can command a large ensemble with daring eloquence or just as quickly blow the roof off the joint with unleashed cacophony." Lane's formal training also includes studies with Anthony Braxton at Wesleyan, and master classes with Karlheinz Stockhausen at Darmstadt. He is the recipient of the 2000 Julius Hemphill Prize for outstanding jazz composition, and has received several Meet the Composer grants for performances in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
