The festival Novara Jazz has just reached its eighth edition and comes back from 26th May to 5th June with two weeks devoted to jazz and contaminations. Also this year unpublished projects and large previews from the Italian and International jazz scene will be presented on the stands of Piazza della Repubblica and Auditorium Cantelli in the heart of Novara; then dj set, jazz brunch and sunset jazz in the most evocative locations of the province, a large photo exhibition, cinema, young bands and more.
First weekend of concerts On Thursday 26th May the Israeli pianist Anat Fort open the festival with a set of single piano, followed by a concert with the singer Ayelet Rose Gottlieb, who arrives in Italy after years of researches, improvisation and awards among New York, London and Tel Aviv without forgetting the collaborations with John Zorn and Yael Zamir. On Friday 27th May the evening on the stand of Piazza Duomo is dedicated to Ebo Taylor, legendary star of the Ghanaian music and the afrobeat scene, recently acclaimed with the album Love and Death, recorded with the collective Afrobeat Academy. On Saturday 28th May Gianluigi Trovesi, with Matthias Spillmann, Fulvio Maras and the Big Band of the Lucerne School of Music, presents Dedalo," a large project realised by Novara Jazz in collaboration with Lucerne School of Music.
Second weekend of concerts On Thursday 2nd June a legend of American Jazz, Charles Gayle, opens the second week of the festival at Auditorium Cantelli with an exclusive single piano set between improvisation and reminiscent of New Orleans. On Friday 3rd June the new project of the Dutch ensemble I Compani: Last Tango in Paris will be on stage, a second reading and a tribute to celebrate the twenty-five years of the band and remember the unforgettable Maria Schneider, after the projects dedicated to Fellini, for the music of Bertolucci's movie and the saxophonist Gato Barbieri. On Saturday 4th June Gianluca Petrella closes the festival with the new project of the association I-Jazz in co-production with Novara Jazz and I-Jazz Ensemble 2011: Giovanni Guidi, John De Leo, Beppe Scardino, Andrea Sartori, Joe Rehmer and Cristiano Calcagnile. The project Il Bidone, is a tribute to Nino Rota for the centenary of the birth of the great composer and conductor.
Dj sets Every Friday and Saturday after the evenings in Piazza Duomo, Novara Jazz continues at Parco dell'Allea with the famous international djs and dance music all over. On Friday 27th May, directly from London to dance with the great jazz and afrobeat music, the dj and collector Duncan Brooker will play one of the biggest collections of 45s in the world, collected after years of travels in Africa. On Saturday 28th May there will be Jazz:re:found night, with Noego directly from Vercelli festival. On Friday 3rd June Oslo Soul Experience will arrive from Norway, a trio of djs dedicated to the northern soul tradition; while on Saturday 4th June Linda & Ted Couldstone with Jimmy & Luis of Soulfoul Torino will make Novara dance with their 45s collection for an amazing Popcorn night!
Jazz brunch and sunset Jazz Jazz brunch and sunset Jazz will be the appointments of the festival that will lead the public discovering monuments, parks, landscapes and cultures through concerts in Novara and province. Moments characterized from the attention and the discovery of tastes and traditions, and obviously from music and improvisation.
The festival will start on Saturday 28th at midday at il Cortile della Soprintendenza per i Beni Architettonici e Paesaggistici, in the heart of the town, for an appointment with the blues roots of Max Prandi, while sunset Jazz at 06:00 p.m. will be the new exhibition space BasexAltezza in which the project NIDO workshop will be presented. On Sunday 29th Novara Jazz moves outside province, for the brunch in Robecco sul Naviglio and to hear the great music of Angelo Leadbelly" Rossi: another appointment in collaboration with the festival Amenoblues.
The second weekend opens on 2nd June with the return of Tappa Jazz!, the bike ride that will lead the public of festival until Villa Picchetta, to meet the tastes of the territory and attend the unique performance of Charles Gayle in single sax. On Saturday 4th June there will be the brunch in the wonderful setting of Casa Bossi in Novara, with the project Tao Drums of Cristiano Calcagnile and Carlo Garof, followed by the aperitif at 06:00 p.m. at Cascinale dei Nobili in Casalbeltrame with Gioel Severini. The best young band of Novara Jazz 2010, Siena Jazz School Ensemble, will close the festival on Sunday 5th June at midday at Parco Beldì in Oleggio
Art, photography and cinema Like every year Novara Jazz is open to visual arts: during the festival the amazing setting of Casa Bossi in Novara will host the retrospective exhibition of the famous Danish photographer Jan Persson, realised with Luciano Rossetti and with the collaboration of Società Fotografica Novarese, Comitato d'amore per Casa Bossi and Phocus Agency. On Friday 29th May, at 09:00 p.m. at Casa Bossi, will be screened the documentary Il Suono Instabile della Libertà, realised by Marco Bergamaschi: a great story of the extraordinary experience of Italian Instabile Orchestra.
The festival will be the opportunity to visit the exhibitions Mark HarrisContinuous Defense, at Museo di Storia Naturale Faraggiana Ferrandi in Novara, and Paolo GonzatoKaraoke Paradise, at Spazio 33 in Oleggio, by Marco Tagliaferro.
Other events A series of events throughout the town of Novara will complete the festival.
All evenings the jam session open to the public, will be held at Trattoria San Marco, which will join young musician, famous international hosts of the festival and whoever wants to join playing alongside exclusive special guests.
After the success of the previous edition the young bands come back also this year; on the stand of Piazza delle Erbe in the heart of the historic centre of Novara, they will be presented to the public through a music program realised with the collaboration of some of the most important schools, academies and Italian music institutions, bringing the great music throughout the town and at all hours of the day.
Moreover there will be two Jazz Workshops: the first one for musicians and non-professionals with Beppe Scardino and Andrea Sartori on Saturday 4th June, and the second one for children at Scuola di musica Dedalo on Saturday 28th May.
On 28th and 29th May Società Fotografica Novarese, with the collaboration of Phocus Agency and Novara Jazz, organizes a workshop of show photography, with the special participation of the historic Danish photographer Ian Persson.
