New England Conservatory announces residency by jazz drummer Lewis Nash April 10-12 and upcoming jazz concerts
New England Conservatory is pleased to announce a residency by jazz drummer Lewis Nash including masterclasses and a concert, all free and open to the public, as part of the Jazz Masters Residency Program April 10-12.
Lewis Nash is a leading jazz drummer with over 250 recordings to his credit including the Grammy-award winning “Look What I Got" by jazz vocalist Betty Carter, the Grammy-award nominated “Random Abstract “ by saxophonist Branford Marsalis and the Grammy-award nominated “Sea Changes" by the Tommy Flanagan Trio. Nash was a member of the Tommy Flanagan Trio from 1990 to 2000 and was featured on six other CD recordings with the piano master. Nash's impressive discography also includes projects with jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson and Benny Carter as well as Ron Carter, Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton and Roy Hargrove. Both Wynton Marsalis and Jon Faddis, in their capacities as orchestra conductors, have asked Lewis to be part of live performances and recordings by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, respectively. Nash has also worked with the Don Pullen/George Adams Quartet, as well as Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, Art Farmer, Clark Terry and Milt Jackson.
NEC's Jazz Masters Residency Program is funded with the generous support of Bruce Hauben and the Helen C. Hauben Foundation of Stow, Massachusetts. Over the last three years, this program has welcomed composer and soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy; composer, arranger and tenor saxophonist Benny Golson; bassist Ron McClure; and drummer Jeff Hirshfield.
Lewis Nash Masterclasses will be Tuesday, April 10, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and Wednesday, April 11, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in NEC's Keller Room at 290 Huntington Avenue in Boston. The Lewis Nash concert with student jazz ensembles will be Thursday, April 12, at 8:00 p.m. in NEC's Jordan Hall. All events are free and open to the public.
One of the original members of NEC's jazz faculty, legendary jazz composer and theorist George Russell has led jazz orchestra concerts at NEC every year for more than three decades, guiding student players deep into the sound world of his catalog of works. The April 24 concert of the NEC Jazz Orchestra is at 8:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The program will include the NEC premiere of Uncommon Ground, commissioned by the New England Presenters in 1987, Stratusphunk, and All About Rosie.

NEC Jazz Composers' Concert features the NEC Jazz Composers' Ensemble, directed by master's student Gabe Gloege, performing student works for small ensembles. Brown Hall. Monday, April 2, at 8:00 p.m.
NEC Honors Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation Ensembles. This concert will include:
Honors Contemporary Improvisation ensemble, “Ensemble Sauvage," includes Matana Roberts, reeds; Jeremiah McLane, accordian; Ayelet Gottlieb, vocals/flute; Diangelo Cicilia, guitar. They will perform improvisatory world music.
Honors Jazz Ensemble, “Chance," includes Eliot Krimsky, piano; Robert Stillman, saxophone; Phil Grenier, bass; and Pete Zimmer, drums. They will perform original compositions and music of Wayne Shorter, George Harrison, Stevie Wonder, and Charlie Parker. NEC's Jordan Hall, Tuesday, April 3 at 8pm. Free.
NEC Jazz Ensembles. First and second year undergraduate jazz majors perform in small jazz ensembles. Brown Hall, Wednesday, April 4 at 8 p.m.
Keller Jazz Series. Student jazz ensembles perform in the Keller Room at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 5, Monday, April 9, and Tuesday-Thursday, April 17-19, Wednesday, April 25, and Tuesday-Wednesday, May 1- 2.
NEC Jazz Composers' Workshop Orchestra. Bob Brookmeyer conducts new works for jazz orchestra by NEC's jazz composition students. NEC's Jordan Hall, 8pm. NEC's Jordan Hall, April 30 at 8:00 p.m.
