The Edward and Sally Van Lier Fund of the New York Community Trust provides support for talented, culturally diverse young people who are seriously dedicated to a career in the arts. Meet The Composer administers the Van Lier Fellowship on behalf of Van Lier Fund of the New York Community Trust.
The purpose of the Fellowship is to provide financial support for young composers in the early stages of their careers, working in any style of music or sound art. Funds can be used for any purpose including the creation of new work, the purchasing of music/tech equipment, travel, or research and development.
The Fellowship is open to African-American and Latino composers thirty-two years of age or younger. The applicant must be a full-time resident of New York City (any borough). The applicant must not be enrolled in a degree-granting program at the time of application (i.e. no students). The one-year fellowship award is $7,000. An additional $1,000 will be available to each Fellow to design and execute an educational outreach program to benefit students and/or youth groups. This educational proposal is not part of the original application and is only designed subsequent to being awarded a fellowship.
The application deadline is April 11th, 2011 at 11:59pm. Work Samples will be sent separately through mail or digitally. - Letter of recommendation from a music-professional* stating why he or she feels the candidate is qualified for the Van Lier Fellowship
- Current biography or resume
- Personal statement on why the candidate is applying for the Fellowship
- Complete or partial list of works
- Brief summary of current and future projects
- Three work samples on an audio CD or sent digitally
