On on Monday April 26th, Lorraine Feather will front a big band headed by Bill Elliott for a combination release party/Duke Ellington's 105th birthday bash at the Catalina Bar and Grill in Los Angeles.
Feather's album, Such Sweet Thunder-Music of the Duke Ellington Orchestra," was released on March 23rd on the Sanctuary label and is Chartbound in its fourth week of radio promotion. The album features ten Ellington instrumentals with Feather's lyrics and vocals. The eleventh track is Mighty Like the Blues," which was written by Leonard Feather (the vocalists's late father) and recorded in 1938 by Ellington.
Initial reviews of the CD have been extraordinary. All About Jazz (Michael Gladstone) called it my bid for Best Vocal Project of 2004..a significant appreciation of the Ellington/ Strayhorn oeuvre. All Music Guide (Ken Dryden) has given it four and a half stars and describes Feather as a natural storyteller...a superb singer who gets the most out of every track." Jazz West (Phil Elwood) declared the project to be the most imaginative, impeccably composed and sung vocal jazz since the breakout of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross in the late 1950s-early 1960s era."
Many of the musicians who contributed their talenst to Such Sweet Thunder" will be on the stand at Catalina's, including pianist Shelly Berg, guitarist Grant Geissman, trumpeters Wayne Bergeron and Gary Grant, saxophonists Bill Liston and Brian Scanlon, and trombonists Bruce Otto and Charlie Morillas.
The performance is at 8:30 (one show only); for reservations call 323-466-2210 or email [email protected].
