Every year, since 1984, musicians and fans have gathered at St. Peter's Church in mid-town Manhattan to pay tribute to the great Lester Young, who has so profoundly influenced American and international jazz. Willie Jones, drummer/educator/activist and Pastor John Garcia Gensel, 'Shepherd of the Night Flock', originated this wonderful tradition of musicians and friends of Lester gathering to celebrate him with music, memories, and reflections. This event always takes place around March 15th, the day of his passing in 1959.
The Lester Young Celebration is a fundraising event sponsored by The Jazz Ministry at St. Peter's Church, the first and longest-running jazz ministry in the world, started by Pastor John Garcia Gensel over 35 years ago. It serves the jazz community in times of need and holds spiritual services for musicians. Proceeds raised by The Lester Young Celebration all go to strengthen this fund, to enable memorial services and emergency assistance for jazz musicians.
Devotees and fans of Lester Young come from near and far to honor Prez and play their tributes to him; from the elder statesmen to the young lions.
