JAZZ STANDARD, one of the nations premier jazz clubs, presents another month of great jazz in December. Jazz Standard and the Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival host pianist Chano Domnguez and his quintet in The Flamenco Side of Kind of Blue (12/3-12/6). The Pablo Ziegler Quartet stars in our annual Tango Meets Jazz festival (12/10-12/13) with special guest saxophonists Miguel Zenon and David Sanchez. The Steve Wilson Ensemble (12/17-12/20) will pay tribute to the late great composer and keyboard master Joe Zawinul. Jazz Standard celebrates New Years Eve week (12/291/3) with an exclusive premiere gala run of soulful New Orleans-flavored jazz aptly themed, Struttin With Some Barbecue, consisting of an allstar ensemble co-led by pianist Henry Butler and alto saxophonist Donald Harrison Jr. This month, Jazz Standard continues our celebrated Mingus Mondays residency with performances by the mighty Mingus Big Band (12/7, 12/21, 12/28) and Mingus Orchestra (12/14). And now (as the saying goes) for something completely different: A stunning new interpretation of the 1959 Miles Davis classic Kind of Blue, as performed by a unique flamenco/jazz combo under the direction of the brilliant pianist Sebastian Domnguez Lozano, better known as Chano Domnguez. Born 49 years ago in the Spanish city of Cdiz, Chano began flamenco guitar studies at age eight, then switched to keyboards when he formed the band Ca, which fused traditional Andalusian roots with progressive rock. Beginning with the formation of his own trio in 1992, Chano has experimented endlessly with the alchemy of jazz and flamenco on such albums as Hecho a Mano and Imn. This is the final concert series of the Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival, proudly co-presented with Jazz Standard. Born and raised in California, in 1960 16-year-old Bill Mays caught a live solo set by Earl Fatha Hines that changed his life: It was so new to my ears, and it was burning! His rhythmic drive, unusual melodic twists, two-handed independence and use of the whole keyboard thrilled and inspired me. In the course of the ensuing decades, Bill worked with everyone from Frank Zappa to Benny Golson while establishing himself as the respected leader of several groups including this superb piano trio. After his last album on Greenleaf Music with the fiery trio session Recommended Tools, David Binney and I talked about shifting gears and doing a larger project that would push me into new areas composition-wise and orchestration-wise, Donny explains. I wanted this to be a beautiful record as it was recorded just before the birth of our daughter Claire. The Vienna-born, conservatory-trained Zawinul played with Maynard Ferguson and Dinah Washington before becoming a mainstay of Cannonball Adderleys powerhouse Sixties band and the composer of soul-jazz anthems like Mercy Mercy Mercy. Zawinul was a crucial contributor to Miles Davis Bitches Brew, a co-founder of Weather Report with Wayne Shorter, and the leader of his own internationally acclaimed band, the Zawinul Syndicate. In the New York Times in 2006, pianist Jason Moran wrote: Usually an artist finds their signature and then they continue refining their signature over time.
