And now (as the saying goes) for something completely different: A stunning new interpretation of the 1959 Miles Davis classic Kind of Blue, as performed by a unique flamenco/jazz combo under the direction of the brilliant pianist Sebastian Domnguez Lozano, better known as Chano Domnguez. Born 49 years ago in the Spanish city of Cdiz, Chano began flamenco guitar studies at age eight, then switched to keyboards when he formed the band Ca, which fused traditional Andalusian roots with progressive rock. Beginning with the formation of his own trio in 1992, Chano has experimented endlessly with the alchemy of jazz and flamenco on such albums as Hecho a Mano and Imn. This is the final concert series of the Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival, proudly co-presented with Jazz Standard. Dont miss the Chano Domnguez Flamenco Quintet in Kind of Blue and somewhere, even Miles will be smiling. Music Charge: $30

Our Mingus Mondays residency continues tonight with the exciting sounds of the Mingus Big Band. Randy Brecker, Jack Walrath, John Stubblefield, and James Carter are among its illustrious alumni, while such musicians as Ku-umba Frank Lacy, Craig Handy, Ryan Kizor, and Helen Sung uphold the bands tradition of adroit musicianship and kinetic excitement. The huge group performs some of Mingus' most complex works with spirit, virtuosity, and plenty of color. (Scott Yanow, AllMusic.com) Music Charge: $25

12/8 AMY CERVINI QUARTET
Amy Cervini voice
Michael Cabe piano
Mark Lau bass
Ernesto Cervini drums

Jazz Standard and Anzic Records celebrate the release of Lovefool, the enchanting new album by vocalist Amy Cervini. On an eclectic mix of songs, from Depeche Mode to Fred Hersch, Amys distinctive delivery neatly straddles the line between confessional balladeering and breezy swing (Time Out New York). Lovefool is a major step forward for a young singer who comes on strong, but never strident. She presents songs with enough heart to convince a listener of her sincerity and enough musical talent to make it worth listening. (Bob Karlovits, Pittsburgh TribuneReview) Music Charge: $20

12/9 BILL MAYS TRIO
Bill Mays piano
Peter Washington bass
Billy Drummond drums

Mays plays on pure inspiration, that exalted level where mere technical concerns have been long forgotten, wrote Mark Miller in the Toronto Globe and Mail. The result is jazz of a sophistication and sheer spontaneity thats rarely heard. Born and raised in California, in 1960 16-year-old Bill Mays caught a live solo set by Earl Fatha Hines that changed his life: It was so new to my ears, and it was burning! His rhythmic drive, unusual melodic twists, two-handed independence and use of the whole keyboard thrilled and inspired me. In the course of the ensuing decades, Bill worked with everyone from Frank Zappa to Benny Golson while establishing himself as the respected leader of several groups including this superb piano trio. Tonights sets will spotlight the tunes featured on Bills fine new CD, Mays at the Movies! Music Charge: $20

12/1012/13 TANGO MEETS JAZZ FESTIVAL with THE PABLO ZIEGLER QUARTET

Special Guest: David Sanchez tenor saxophone (12/12-12/13)

From Puerto Rico to Buenos Aires the modern tango takes on a new musical dance when Jazz Standard proudly presents our seventh annual Tango Meets Jazz Festival, featuring and directed by pianist Pablo Ziegler, a master of this thrilling Argentine style and the creator (with Quique Sinesi and Walter Castro) of the Latin Grammy Award-nominated album Buenos Aires Report. Two outstanding saxophonists from Puerto Rico will be Pablos special guests for this run, with Miguel Zenon appearing 12/1011 and David Sanchez joining in 12/1213. Ziegler plays straight from the beating, bleeding heart of nuevo tango, with its Argentinian mix of swagger and sweetness. His tunes stay firmly within the tradition, with an urgent, finely tuned control of tension and release. (London Guardian) Music Charge: $30

12/14 MINGUS ORCHESTRA

Kenny Rampton - trumpet
Ben Monder - guitar
Michael Rabinowitz - Bassoon
tba - bass clarinet
Bobby Routch - French Horn
Boris Kozlov - bass
Donald Edwards drums
Special Guest: Edmar Castaneda Colombian harp

Charles Mingus was more than jazz. His audacious ear for dissonance put him on par with Charles Ives, while his penchant for layering various patterns to create a complex and dissonant contrapuntal web matched Stravinskys prowess with the orchestra. Mingus works did not seem like hybrids at all. They were not beholden to two different traditions but rather emerged out of the compositional sensibilities that informed twentieth-century American music without a concern for what was or was not jazz. (Chadwick Jenkins, PopMatters.com, April 2009) Music Charge: $25

12/1512/16 DONNY MCCASLIN GROUP
Donny McCaslin tenor saxophone
Alex Sipiagin trumpet
Ryan Keberle trombone
Marcus Rojas tuba
John Clarke French horn
Ben Monder guitar
Edward Simon piano
Hans Glawischnig bass
Adam Cruz drums

Declaration is an apt title for Donny McCaslins new Sunnyside Records CD: Its a major largescale work from one of the most inventive and emotionally compelling under50 player/composers on the American jazz scene (and a Grammy Award nominee for his performance with the Maria Schneider Orchestra on the 2004 CD Concert In The Garden). After his last album on Greenleaf Music with the fiery trio session Recommended Tools, David Binney and I talked about shifting gears and doing a larger project that would push me into new areas composition-wise and orchestration-wise, Donny explains. I wanted this to be a beautiful record as it was recorded just before the birth of our daughter Claire. My hope is that this record conveys some of the feelings that have run so strongly through me during the process of birth and new parenthood; joy, wonder, and tremendous love. Music Charge: $20

12/1712/20 STEVE WILSON ENSEMBLE: THE ZAWINUL PROJECT
Steve Wilson alto & soprano saxophone
Jeremy Pelt trumpet
Danny Grissett piano
Ugonna Okegwo bass
Rodney Green drums

Steve Wilson, hailed by NPR as one of the finest saxophonists in the business, returns with his stellar band to Jazz Standard to perform a tribute to the late great keyboardist and composer Joe Zawinul (19322007). The Vienna-born, conservatory-trained Zawinul played with Maynard Ferguson and Dinah Washington before becoming a mainstay of Cannonball Adderleys powerhouse Sixties band and the composer of soul-jazz anthems like Mercy Mercy Mercy. Zawinul was a crucial contributor to Miles Davis Bitches Brew, a co-founder of Weather Report with Wayne Shorter, and the leader of his own internationally acclaimed band, the Zawinul Syndicate. In the New York Times in 2006, pianist Jason Moran wrote: Usually an artist finds their signature and then they continue refining their signature over time. Its rare that an artist has multiple signatures. Joe has gone on to many signatures, and that is what inspires me. Hes beyond being pegged. Music Charge: $25 / $30 Friday & Saturday

12/21 MINGUS BIG BAND
Scott Robinson, Donny McCaslin tenor saxophone
Jaleel Shaw, Craig Handy alto saxophone, flute
Lauren Sevian baritone saxophone
Andy Hunter, Dave Taylor, tba trombones
Kenny Rampton, Alex Sipiagin, tba trumpets
David Kikoski piano
Boris Kozlov bass
Donald Edwards - drums

The band is equally adept on punchy up-tempo romps like Wham Bam and beautiful long-lined ballads such as Celia. Soloists challenge one another, often paired in trading choruses, fours, and ending in tandems. It all makes the music bristle with a palpable excitement. (George Kanzler, Newark StarLedger) Music Charge: $25

12/2212/23 EDMAR CASTANEDA TRIO plus Special Guest JOE LOCKE
Edmar Castaneda Colombian harp
Marshall Gilkes trombone
David Silliman drums and percussion
Special Guests:
Joe Locke vibraphone

Edmar Castaneda transforms the unique and beautiful sound of the Colombian harp with his commanding technique and ingenious improvisations. A jazz harpist of imposing talent (The New York Times), Edmar has performed and recorded with Paquito D'Rivera, John Scofield, Trio De Paz, Lila Downs, and Chico O'Farrills Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra. These shows mark a welcome return to our stage for Edmar Castaneda, highlighted by special guest appearances from Joe Locke and Andrea Tierra, both featured on his beautiful new ArtistShare CD Entre Cuerdas. Most people are forced to do things they dont want to for most of the time, and so they get to the point where they feel they no longer have any choices about anything important, including who they are. We create our own slavery. But Im going to keep on getting through, and finding out the kind of man I am, through my music. Thats the one place I can be free. (Charles Mingus [19221979], from a conversation with Nat Hentoff) Music Charge: $25
