Jazz Singer-Composer Cynthia Sala Tyson Performs To Benefit Nyumbani

Jazz singer-composer, Cynthia Sala Tyson performs with a four piece ensemble on Saturday, June 29th, 8pm at the Baby Grand Theater, 818 Market Street, Wilmington, DE to benefit Nyumbani, an orphanage for HIV+ kids in Nairobi, Kenya. Tyson learned about Nyumbani, while working as musical director at the Jazz Academy in Nairobi for a number of years. While there, she promoted jazz throughout Eastern Africa andperformed in Africa and Europe with various ensembles. The orphanage was established ten years ago by an American physician, Dr. Angelo D'Agostino and currently houses 76 children from infancy to 18 years, and also provides outreach care to over 200 youngsters, living in the slums of Nairobi. Having performed on four continents, Cynthia Sala knows how to move an audience through song.Her repertoire consists of spirituals, blues, ragtime, mainstream jazz and original compositions. A former student of famed jazz pianist, Mary Lou Williams, and Ernie Wilkins, Tyson is a two-time National Endowment of the Arts Vocal Music Fellowship recipient. She also received Down Beat Magazine's Adjudicator and President's awards, as well as the Atlanta Olympic Games Cultural Olympiad award for her outstanding contributions to jazz education for children. Tyson has also written for films.
