Jazz Magnet is pleased to announce the release of David X. Young's Jazz Loft 1954 - 1965 (Jazz Magnet JAM-2002) a unique document of a special time in the history of jazz.

For over a decade, David X. Young's artist's loft in New York City's Flower District flourished as the legendary after hours Mecca for some of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Miles Davis and Bill Evans were among the regulars at these jam sessions. The painter in this 'rundown' loft was David X. Young who had befriended many of these legendary jazz musicians by providing them with a place to rehearse, jam and hang. What Gertrude Stein's Paris salon was to writers, the loft in New York City was to jazz musicians. In fact, for a brief moment, the loft may have been the center of the jazz universe - a bastion of experimentation and improvisation. A little place where legends and new comers a like jammed and where solos lasted till dawn.

The Jazz Loft 1954 -1965 will feature 50 full color jazz paintings in various media - pastels, oil, acrylic and pen & ink - all beautifully reproduced on high quality paper. Black and White jazz photos taken by David X. Young and Bill Crowley, many being published for the first time. A vivid history of the loft written by David X. Young with remembrances by Bill Crow, Bob Brookmeyer and Teddy Charles. And an introduction by noted jazz author Howard Mandel.

The music on the The Jazz Loft 1954 -1965 was compiled from hundreds of hours of private never-before-released jam sessions recorded by David X. Young on his old Webcor tape recorder. The two CDs, with over two hours of monumental lost jam sessions, feature a who's who of jazz legends that include Pepper Adams, Mose Allison, Bob Brookmeyer , Bill Crow, Don Ellis, Dave McKenna, Jim Hall, Jimmy Raney, Hall Overton, Jerry Segal, Zoot Sims, Steve Swallow and Bill Takas.

Now for the fist time in over 40 years we can discover the behind-the-scene stories as told in words, paintings and music of these legendary sessions that took place at 821 Sixth Avenue in New York City.

Looking back historically it was a big event-- at the time all we wanted to do was play. and it was courtesy of Dave that the whole thing happened and kept happening. He was the man who taped us, who made the whole thing happen and it was our respect for him, his flagrant love for us and our music and, in turn, our high regard for him as an artist that created this incredible environment in which we flourished, continuing a very unusual and important period in our music. - Bob Brookmeyer
