CHENNAI: There's nothing ostentatious about their music - simple rhythms that start slowly and build up into an energetic tempo characterise the music of the Titi Robin Trio that performed on Tuesday evening. This kind of progression is something I have in all my music," says Thierry 'Titi' Robin, who fronts the gypsy jazz group. Sincerity is most important for a musician, not speed, showiness or rhythm," he says.
Thierry and fellow musicians Francis Varis and Ze Luis Nascimento were in Chennai for a day to meet local musicians, perform by the poolside at the Taj Coromandel and even record for Yuhi Sethu's upcoming Tamil film. I would have liked to spend more time meeting Carnatic musicians, but it is a very short trip," says the 50-year-old who loves the sound of the mridangam.
