Jamaica's highly acclaimed University Singers, under the direction of Noel Dexter, takes its choral theatre on a five-city tour of the UK and Germany beginning July 23.
The tour, conducted under the theme, Connecting with Diaspora: Building Bridges Through Music, forms part of the group's continuing mission as ambassadors of the University of the West Indies (UWI) and by extension Jamaica.
The group is slated for performances in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Nottingham in the UK and in Berlin, Germany.
The UWI Singers will participate in a number of official functions marking the 48th Jamaican Independence celebrations. They will appear at the British Foundation for the UWI Fundraiser at the Trinidadian High Commission, Jamaican Independence Service at St. Martin in the Fields Church in London, at Independence Performances at the Jamaican Embassy in Berlin, and at the Independence Church Service organised by the Association of Jamaican Nationals in Birmingham.
The focus of the tour is not only to make connections with the Diaspora but also their music, which includes a vast repertoire of classical, Jamaica folk, patriotic, spiritual, calypso and contemporary Jamaican songs, will reach out to new communities across the cities.
