Not all of the copycat shots involve jazz. Baseball and hip-hop have also got into the act. The latest jazz entry is Indianapolis, which has produced major musicians including J.J. Johnson, Freddie Hubbard, Slide Hampton, David Baker, ...

A Film About Jack Sheldon

All About Jazz
A Los Angeles man and wife, Doug McIntyre and Penny Peyser, last night premiered Trying To Get Good, a film about the trumpeter, singer and outrageous humorist Jack Sheldon. They and others know that Sheldon is one of the most gifted musicians alive. They hope that the film will help bring him general recognition that he has deserved since the early 1950s. From Gary Goldstein's story in yesterday's Los Angeles Times:
The couple spent more than five of their nearly six ...Continue Reading...

Satoko Fujii ... and Bands ... Looking Back from the Future ...
Source:
All About Jazz
I can guarantee, with certainty, that, somewhere in 2087, in a bar on the planet ZOrghk942, when some legally extraterrestrialized, yet interesting, jazz afficionados are thinking back about their favorite music at the turn of the century on planet Earth, that Satoko Fujii will come up in the discussion. Many- and I mean MANY - of the musicians that we think of as good today, will unfortunately have totally disappeared into oblivion, disappeared into a black hole outside history, fortunately ...

Ombak Heats It up This Summer at Cous Cous
Source:
All About Jazz
Ombak has big shoes to fill. Taking over Fight the Big Bull's Wednesday night spot at Cous Cous this summer, Ombak, led by trombonist Bryan Hooten, is the sort of band that people are nervous to go see. It is the sort of band that could be labeled avant garde," or experimental," or some other scary term that the average listener might find daunting. What the band delivered last night, however, is best described by Hooten's goal for the group. ...

Jam on the River 2008 With nighttime t-shirt temperatures and the knowledge that we were about to rage for 72 more hours, the weekend was already a success before it had even started. Pats on the back to those throwing kick-off parties with the New Deal that started at the stroke of midnight. A rambunctious sell-out crowd took over ...
