Buffalo, NY -- What do you get when you combine elements of trance, steeped in generous portions of rhythm with a heat-infused saxophone that is masterfully caressed by one very bad cat? You get a pass on a very trippy vibe that some might say is “Out of the Box." Produced by Four 80 East (one of the hottest bands that has existed to defy all the rules), Out of the Box (Innervision Records) is the third solo release by ...

Ali and Toumani contains the final recordings made by a pair of master musicians: the Malian guitarist Ali Farka Tour, who died in 2006, and the Cuban bassist Orlando “Cachato" Lopez, who died last year.

But this 11-track album -- the second collection of collaborations by Tour and the Malian kora player Toumani Diabet -- doesn't sound like death. Rather, it's an early contender for the warmest, most life-affirming listen of 2010. As it was on the 2005 Grammy-winning “In ...

1930s Recordings Preserve Haiti's Cultural Wealth

Source: All About Jazz

He preserved the sounds on aluminum discs for the Library of Congress, but they were largely forgotten for seven decades as they sat in the library's archives. Recently discovered, they were compiled into a box set released last fall. Haitian music scholars called it a “cultural ...

Soon after English pop star Cilla Black and Burt Bacharach recorded Alfie in London in late 1965, the single was released by Parlophone in Britain in January 1966. Paramount's English marketers intended for the single to stir up interest for the movie prior to the film's release in London in March. But Black's single exceeded expectations, inching up the U.K. charts for three months, topping out at No. 9 shortly before the film opened at month's end. The contrast between ...

The Making of "Alfie" (Part 1)

If the arrival of the Beatles in February 1964 marked a turning point in jazz's commercial viability, then the recording of Alfie by Cilla Black in 1965 was the sound of the door slamming shut. Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for the U.S. release of the English film starring Michael Caine, the song went on to become a big hit for Black, Cher and Dionne Warwick. Despite Bacharach and David's initial trepidation about writing the song, Alfie today ...
