Jorge Strunz, Neotropical Nocturnes (Selva)
Latin American guitarist set to release solo album March 16
Seasonal storms sweep in at sunset. Vines interweave like arpeggios. Rains sigh and pelt the tin roof. Night falls, melancholy and magical, over crumbling colonial facades and humble villages, over the tropical nexus of two continents.
Genre-defying guitarist Jorge Strunz, one half of the acclaimed global guitar duo Strunz & Farah, evokes this luxuriant and haunting world, taking his virtuosity in a new and subtle ...

Barbes Records Announces: La's Accordion Playing Punks Very Be Careful's " Escape Room" out April 13
Source:
Press Junkie PR
Don't call Los Angeles's seminal vallenato band Very Be Careful a world music" act. The musicians' sound may be seeded in a particular region - the coastal northeast of Colombia, where this accordion-driven folk music has been making pulses race and libidos rise since the 1950s - but what they play is raw and groove-oriented.
As you can hear on the band's new Barbes Records release Escape Room (out April 13), the material is mostly their own (with covers of ...

Various - Boogie Woogie Kings (Delmark)
Source:
Master of a Small House
As an idiom, boogie woogie seems an ideal candidate for sampler consumption. That's a polite way of saying that for many listeners, a little tends to go a long way. Rhythmic and melodic protocols tend to follow relatively rigid parameters and most purveyors aren't usually known for their ability to straddle other piano forms. That hasn't stopped the good folks at Delmark from continuing to dust off classic sides by the leading lights of the style. This latest collection lives ...

The Souljazz Orchestra Release Rising Sun
Since their creation in 2002 in Ottawa, Canada, The Souljazz Orchestra has become one of the most potent bands in their field. Drawing on the rough, raw grooves of the '60s and '70s and fusing soul, jazz, Afro and Latin rhythms within their music, they have moved forward the blueprint of Fela, Fania and the funk in entirely new ways, whilst keeping the vital analogue grit intact.
They have previously released two albums on ...

Rebecca Parris: You Don't Know Me
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
The other day I happened across a CD of a singer whose name was new to me. As readers of this bog know, I'm pretty picky about the singers I listen to. I like my female vocalists authentic, earthy and deeply meaningful. I can't help it. My ears are spoiled and can instantly separate the fakers from the achers. I also favor jazz singers over pop or cabaret warblers. The difference for me is that jazz singers are bruised fruit, ...
