The Real Book Argentina (Free Download)

Source: Inverted Garden by Eric Benson
August 14, 2010

In 2008, Argentine pianist Esteban Sehinkman undertook a grand project: he would create a “real book" of compositions by Argentine jazz musicians. Anyone who has ever played in a high school jazz combo is familiar with the American real book (or “fake book"), a collection of lead sheets for pretty much every standard you can think of. The first time you play “All The Things You Are" or “Body and Soul," you're probably looking at the real book. Sehinkman's idea ...

JazzWax List: Giants of Jazz

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers
August 14, 2010

Extra-large jazz artists typically wound up with colorful nicknames that suited their silhouettes. But what if we were to assemble an ensemble of musicians whose names fit the bill, forgetting about whether or not they were contemporaries or even that portly? Here's my list of entries for our playful Giants of Jazz sextet, complete with a vocalist and arranger... Fats Navarro (trumpet) Tubby Hayes (tenor) Porky Cohen (trombone) Fats Waller (piano) Chubby Jackson (bass) Big Sid Catlett (drums) Big Joe ...

Etrange En Compagnie - Communication Going Wrong

Source: Michael Ricci
August 13, 2010

A message from Berger Rond Enter a world of communication going wrong, but musically with three languages for the lyrics (English, French, Swedish), an instrumentation varying from most of the wind instruments to tones of percussions, violins and a few cellos of all kinds, from the most texture oriented to the more folkloric to electronic dissonance. The abstract vocal melodies are added to epic structures that were fully developed by building the most basic sound patterns with patience, without ...

Ted Hearne - Katrina Ballads (2010)

Source: Something Else!
August 13, 2010

By Mark Saleski In the late 1970's, Chanel, Inc. took a bold step in advertising for their flagship fragrance, Chanel No. 5. Employing a cool bland of arthouse elan and surreal literary images, the campaign set a new standard for advertising creativity. The Ridley Scott-directed “Share the Fantasy" ad—"I am made of blue sky and golden light...and I will feel this way forever" remained in viewers minds for years to come. You might not think that there would be much ...

Erik Friedlander - Alchemy (2010)

Source: Something Else!
August 13, 2010

By Pico Earlier this week, Erik Friedlander released his 12th album, in his fiftieth year on earth. Those facts may not be so important to you, but the music that marks both events just might. Especially if you like the army of sounds, both familiar and strange, that Friedlander wrests from a cello. Alchemy, as he calls this new record, is really reverse alchemy: the process of deconstructing the graceful, formal instrument into its primal components. As a virtuoso on ...

Mundell Lowe: TV Action Jazz

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers
August 13, 2010

Among Mundell Lowe's finest albums (and there are many) are the two TV Action Jazz LPs he recorded in 1959 and 1960. Most jazz fans think of Mundell solely as a polished guitarist in both club and studio settings. In fact, Mundell also is a terrific swinging arranger, and the TV Action Jazz albums bear this out. The first one, recorded in February 1959, was called TV Action Jazz! The album featured Donald Byrd (tp), Jimmy Cleveland (tb), Herbie Mann ...

On Wednesday, September 15th, The ExPosed Blues Duo, featuring vocalist Fay Victor and guitarist Anders Nilsson, will celebrate their August 31st debut, BARE (Greene Avenue Music), with a special hometown performance at Barbès in Brooklyn. Best known for their work together in Ms. Victor's acclaimed quartet, the Fay Victor Ensemble, these frequent collaborators have used this increasingly vital side project to showcase their distinctive, stripped-down approach to spirituals, jazz standards and early 20th century blues music. “It's a nice cross-section ...
