September 7, 2010

Known for playing a broad mixture of styles during his live performances, James Derrickson (aka: The J. Derrickson Project) realized that he had a fast growing love for the Blues, in particular. While playing bass in a three piece Blues band for 3 years back around 2000, he took his first stab at composing Blues tunes, and quickly recognized that it came fairly easy for him. After releasing two R&B CD's in 2003 and 2007, James decided the time was ...

Soulive - Rubber Soulive (2010)

September 7, 2010

By Pico As the most popular pop band of all time, it naturally follows that the Beatles have been the most-covered band of all time. Their songs' popularity has extended into every form of music, and that greasy, soulful organ jazz has been no exception. Still, the sounds that he conjures with his array of effects ...

By Nick Deriso The cover art for “Secret Story" on Geffen is telling: There's no central image, but a dizzying patchwork of photographs. The lineup is much the same: Leave it to Pat Metheny to make a solo album with about 80 other players—including everybody from the Metheny Group and a good portion of the London Orchestra. I was more concerned with the possible absence of one in particular: But on a rare recording without major input from Lyle Mays, ...

CD Discoveries of the Week

Since this is a holiday weekend, I decided to move my usual Sunday review feature to Monday and stretch out a bit. What's more, I had a bunch of new discs to share with you, so making this a day's post rather than a squeezed-in feature made the most sense: You've got to sample Chico Pinheiro's There's a Storm Inside. If you dig Chet Baker, you're going to love this Brazilian singer-guitarist. He has enormous taste and delivers lyrics with ...
