Joe Diorio and Sonny Stitt
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Guitarist Joe Diorio recorded only two albums with saxophonist Sonny Stitt. Both are among my favorite Stitt recordings thanks to Diorio's extraordinary swinging rhythm guitar playing and soulful fills. The first of the pair was Move on Over (1963) and the second was My Main Man (1964). Both were recorded for the Argo label and both featured Stitt in peak form on alto and tenor saxophones. On these dates, Diorio provides aggressive, rhythmic chord comping and ringing guitar solos that ...

Rifftides by Doug Ramsey
A dyslexia attack a week ago caused the Rifftides proprietor to alert readers to a radio broadcast last Sunday that, in fact, will take place this coming Sunday, September 19. The only way to make amends is to correct the mistake and post the item again. The entire Rifftides staff is on vacation this week, more or less, but this may give the impression that we're on the job. On his Jazz Northwest program this weekend, Jim Wilke will be ...

Jazz Lives by Michael Steinman
Jazz musicians know that great truth: if you stay up late, you can always sleep tomorrow. Although the players at a jazz party might seem to have an exhausting schedule, many of them are fueled by the encounters with their peers and heroesthus, an after-hours jam session often happens. I was lucky enough to be awake for this one and have a fully-charged video camera. The session took place at the Victory Pub" in the Village Hotel Newcastle, the comfortable ...

Miles Davis' 'Bitches Brew' Turns 40 and Gets the Box Set Treatment
Source:
All About Jazz @ Spinner
I've gone on record more than once saying I lean more toward John Coltrane than Miles Davis. Yet such is the magnitude of Davis' legacy that it is impossible for either jazz fan or jazz critic to avoid spending considerable time listening to the trumpeter. No jazz musician I can think of was recorded more often. No leader I can think of had more of his sidemen go on to become stars in their own right. No jazz artist moved ...
