Bobby Watson - The Gates BBQ Suite (Self-Released, 2010)

Source: Music and More by Tim Niland
September 22, 2010

Alto saxophonist and composer Bobby Watson was at the forefront of the New York jazz scene from the late 70's to the late '90's playing with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and recording a series of albums as a leader. In 2000, he returned home to Kansas City to teach at the local university and re-connect with the big band legacy of the city's past. On this album, five years in the making, he leads the University's big band on a ...

Mississippi Sheiks, Bo Carter, Bessie Jackson, Lil Johnson, Others - Roots N' Blues: Raunchy Business (1928-39)

Source: Something Else!
September 22, 2010

By Nick Deriso I always chuckle when I pull out this Columbia-Legacy compilation, a CD of pre-war tracks that boasts one of those blocky black PARENTAL ADVISORY stickers for explicit lyrics. It's an album of steadfastly dirty blues songs—though innuendo replaces the jarring language of today's brazen new world. Still, their very content, even by suggestion, meant many of these sides were issued under pseudonyms to avoid problems with cops or the family lawyer. Columbia made a terrific effort on ...

Neil Haverstick - Fretless (2010)

September 22, 2010

By Mark Saleski If you have a few hours to spare, and are looking for some cheap entertainment, search for one of those “Best Guitarists" lists on the Internet. Oh dear, the comments will absolutely slay you with their hilarity. Just about everybody can find a way to be offended that their “Best" has been slighted in one way or another—placement in the wrong spot on the list..."Clapton is better than Malmsteen?! R U Krazy?!!," or by being left off ...

Norma Winstone - Stories yet to Tell (2010)

Source: Something Else!
September 22, 2010

By Mark Saleski A variant of the “I remember exactly where I was when I first heard this" thing is the phenomenon of incomplete Déjà Vu. This occurs when you hear a piece of music and it seems totally familiar...except...hmmm...what was it? The music of vocalist Norma Winstone reminds me of my Aunt Rose's figurine collection. More specifically, it was a couple of details about her bedroom. When I was a little kid, I loved to visit her and marvel ...

David S. Ware - Onecept (2010)

Source: Something Else!
September 22, 2010

By Pico Within the realm of improvised music saxophone players, Anthony Braxton has few peers, but David S. Ware has to be considered a lifetime member of that exclusive club. A free jazz saxophonist who is also a technician of the highest order, Ware has that rare ability to blur the lines between inside and outside playing. Every time I listen to him play, I hear an extension of John Coltrane's Meditations, because even as he plays unhinged, it's passion ...

Dave Douglas & Keystone: Spark Of Being (3CD Box) Release Day

Source: Dave Douglas / Greenleaf Music
September 21, 2010

On April 24th, 2010, Dave Douglas and experimental filmmaker Bill Morrison unveiled their multimedia collaboration, Spark Of Being, at Stanford University. On film, it stands as a reinterpretation of the Frankenstein myth using new, archival, and distressed footage. The themes, penned by Douglas for his Grammy-nominated band Keystone, integrate electronics seamlessly into the improvised music, piecing sounds and movement together to make three strikingly different creatures. CD 1: SOUNDTRACK is literally the soundtrack to the film by Bill Morrison. CD ...
