LABEL DEBUT FEATURES REUBEN ROGERS & ANTONIO SANCHEZ, AMONG OTHER SPECIAL GUESTS While growing up in Sao Paulo, Brazil, studying classical piano, Helio Alves did not pay much attention to the samba and other indigenous rhythms that surrounded him. Yet today, as one of the most in-demand and consistently creative pianists on the international jazz scene, he incorporates samba, baião, and other Brazilian patterns into his technically stunning, rhythmically and harmonically challenging, and frequently rhapsodic approach to jazz. One Track Mind: Mary Halvorson "Sea Seizure (No. 19)" (2010)
Source:
Something Else!
By Pico I don't pay a great deal of attention to what other jazz critics say about records as I probably should; chalk it up to laziness, I suppose. But even my lazy ass couldn't help but notice all the interest in media circles buzzing around guitarist Mary Halvorson's record released earlier this month, Saturn Sings. The jazz nuts at NPR have been going gaga over it, and so has Jason Moran. The notoriety and praise has even gone international. ...

Something Else!
By Mark Saleski You look at the song listing and see Alfie," Pennies From Heaven," Shadow Of Your Smile," and..."Smoke On The Water? What? Did I read that right? Yes, and singer-guitarist KJ Denhert is not foolin' around. Well, except for when she is. Denhert refers to her music as Urban Folk and Jazz," which kind of makes sense if urban" can be split into its constituent parts: funk and soul. In fact, let's start right ...

Rifftides by Doug Ramsey
Some of the best new work of prominent American jazz artists is not on US labels, and not all of it is easy to find. Stars is a case in point. The pianist in the band known as the December 2nd Quartet is Dena DeRose, who sings on several tracks of this charming album. Bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Akira Tana, complete the rhythm section. The rising young trumpeter Dominick Farinacci is the fourth member. Benny Green is guest pianist ...
