Music Pioneer Ant-Bee Releases New CD Featuring Former Yes, Focus, Gong, Zappa, Capt. Beefheart, Utopia, Alice Cooper Members
Source:
Glass Onyon PR - Keith James
Asheville, NCAfter a 12 year gap between albums, and fans holding their breaths, avant-garde music pioneer ANT-BEE, best known for recording ex-members of the Mothers of Invention and Alice Cooper Group together on the critically acclaimed 1998 release 'Lunar Muzik,' has finally released what could be considered the artist's masterpiece. Possibly the most unique and innovative album to be recorded in decades, ANT-BEE 'Electronic Church Muzik' is an exploration into the spirituality of man (and woman) in a steam-of-consciousness psychedelic ...

Hal Singer Feat. David Murray - Challenge (Marge, 2010)
Source:
Music and More by Tim Niland
This was a very interesting collaboration between saxophonists Hal Singer and David Murray. Aided my Murray's core band of Lafayette Gilchrist on piano, Jaribu Shahid on bass and Hamid Drake on drums, the group develops a nice swing feel that is less of a tenor battle and more of a friendly conversation. The saxophone tones contrast nicely, with Singer's lighter Pres like tone counteracting nicely with the gruff Hawkins like feeling of David Murray. Occasionally I longed to hear them ...

Deep Cuts: Ray Charles, "Am I Blue" (1959)
Source:
Something Else!
By Nick DeRiso Am I Blue" is a largely forgotten argument for Ray Charles' striking ability to synthesize jazz, blues, country and gospel into music with a broader appeal. That's saying something, considering that it appears on The Genius of Ray Charles, a half-big band/half-strings Atlantic release that became one of his most celebrated efforts. Charles effortlessly melds both the secular and sacred singing styles, all the while injecting sharp flourishes of jazz. But Am I Blue" is often overlooked ...

Clarence Johnson: Low Down Papa
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Before radio, before the phonograph and before the jukebox, there was the piano roll. An ingenious invention dating back to the 1890s, the piano roll was the first way in which the public could hear recorded music. Many of the major piano roll companies were in Chicago, and by the early 1920s, some of these companies were recording black musicians who had relocated to the city from the South to play in speakeasies. One of these musicians was Clarence Jelly" ...

"Inner State," Debut CD by San Francisco-Based Guitarist/Composer Alex Pinto, to be Released by Pursuance Records 3/22
Source:
Terri Hinte Publicity
San Francisco-based jazz guitarist Alex Pinto has a sound and concept unlike any other player on the scene. On his debut CD, Inner State, which features his working quartet, Pinto makes a powerful first impression with his fluid phrasing, bright tone, and a program of seven original compositions marked by engaging melodies and unorthodox harmonic forms. What I like about Alex is that he is a true artist," says Jaz Sawyer, whose Pursuance Records will release Inner State on March ...

Listen up Preview: Paul Simon, "The Afterlife" (2011)
Source:
Something Else!
By Nick DeRiso The Afterlife," featured on Paul Simon's forthcoming album So Beautiful or So What, is pulsing and sinewyalmost like a lost track from Graceland. Not that there's anything wrong with that. See, Simon has said the premise of this new recording was to get away from the rhythmic focus he'd had since that late 1980s smash, to focus more on singer-songwriterly guitar-based tracks. And he certainly did that on the advance cut Getting Ready for Christmas Day," a ...

Gary Sellers - Soul Apparatus (2011)
Source:
Something Else!
Photo from Gary Sellers' websiteBy Nick DeRiso Blues guitarist Gary Sellers has a depth of passion, and a delicate touch at melding styles, that belies his youth. Whatever grade he's in, though, Sellers has done his homework. Listening to his new recording Soul Apparatus, you hear Gregg Allman in Sellers' vocal delivery, and a playing style that melds both the blues stylings of T-Bone Walker and the jazzy plucking of Wes Montgomery. There's also no small amount of Sam Taylor, ...

Impulse! Records Celebrates 50 Years of Jazz Innovation With Reissues, Box Set

All About Jazz @ Spinner
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of Impulse! Records. Of course, John Coltrane (pictured) was the leading light on this revered imprint, releasing much of his '60s material on the label, but Impulse! was actually founded and run early on by legendary record producer Creed Taylor, who brought the label to immediate prominence under the ownership of ABC. Now, Verve Records, which is in control of the Impulse! catalog these days, is marking ...
