Savoring the Perfect Mystique of MPS

Savoring the Perfect Mystique of MPS

Source: Sound Insights by Doug Payne

Over the last couple of years, the great German label Promising Music has issued some of the more eclectic and iconoclastic releases of Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer's legendary MPS label. The releases are beautifully packaged in gatefold LP-like sleeves, fully reproducing the album's original cover graphics (encased in a wrap-around utilizing oddly Japanese text, suggesting that the it's the Japanese who are known for issuing this music so lovingly) and even providing new notes which reflect on the importance of the ...

Dave Liebman Plays the Blues a la Trane

Dave Liebman Plays the Blues a la Trane

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards

With a long and exceptional career already behind him Dave Liebman shows no sign of flagging. Quite the opposite. His latest, Lieb Plays the Blues a la Trane (DayBreak 75978), is a sax-bass-drums trio in a live setting, an ideal way to hear Lieb. And of course he returns to his roots on this album to re-examine his debt to the Master, John Coltrane, and the blues in-and-out that Trane pioneered. The bass and drums are handled well by two ...

Ginger Baker - Horses and Trees (1986, Reissue)

Ginger Baker - Horses and Trees (1986, Reissue)

Source: Something Else!

By Nick DeRiso Fusion in the most complete sense of the word, Ginger Baker's all-too-brief Horses & Trees melds jazz, funk, world music, electronica, reggae, hip-hop and something noiser still. Issued in 1986 on the New York-based art-dance label Celluloid label, this angular, deeply challenging effort was produced by Bill Laswell, who also appears on bass. The victim perhaps of its own complexity, Horses & Trees has been out of print in the U.S. since at least 1995—until now. A ...

Bobby Selvaggio - Grass Roots Movement (2011)

Bobby Selvaggio - Grass Roots Movement (2011)

Source: Something Else!

By S. Victor Aaron For a serious post-bop performer to take a leap into Grooveland, it can often be a risky bet. Will they be able to keep their artistic integrity? Will they even care? A couple of years ago, alto saxophonist Bobby Selvaggio made his second album (his first for the Arabesque Recordings label), leading a standard quintet that featured Kenny Werner through sophisticated modern jazz compositions all written by Selvaggio himself. Modern Times (2009) as that album is ...

Rebirth for Music Retail? Negotiations Begin to Charge Stores Just 80 Cents Upfront to Stock a CD

Rebirth for Music Retail? Negotiations Begin to Charge Stores Just 80 Cents Upfront to Stock a CD

Source: HypeBot

(UPDATE) UK retailer Tesco is asking record labels to accept much smaller upfront payments for CDs with an additional payout once it sells. The negotiation tests the bargaining power labels still have as CDs sales continue to decline. Similar talks have reportedly begun in the US, and the shift could motivate retailers to once again stock a much broader selection of music. Instead of paying $11or $13 upfront for a typical album, Tesco wants to pay just 80 cents, with ...

Joe Sachse Trio - One Take (Jazzwerkstatt, 2010) ****

Joe Sachse Trio - One Take (Jazzwerkstatt, 2010) ****

Source: Free Jazz by Stef Gijssels

By Paul Acquaro As far as I can tell, Joe Sachse's 'One Take' is not about technical chops, nor is it really about the compositions, however in the course of its 78 minutes, neither are lacking. Due to a paucity of liner notes (I'm working from mp3), I am making some assumptions about this loose and enjoyable recording, namely that its title is indicative of the albums real focus: savoring the thrill of creation. 'One Take' is also an album ...

Gene Ammons: Up Tight!

Gene Ammons: Up Tight!

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Gene Ammons' Boss Tenor is arguably the tenor saxophonist's best known and most critically acclaimed album. With songs like Canadian Sunset, Close Your Eyes and Blue Ammons, the June 1960 album has enormous cohesion and creative aggression. But as rich as Boss Tenor is, I've always been more partial to Ammons' Up Tight! and its sister album, Boss Soul. Recorded in October 17, 1961 for Prestige, Up Tight! featured Ammons with a sound that seemed bigger, fatter and more gospel-influenced ...
