Terence Blanchard - Malcolm X: The Original Motion Picture Score (1991)

Source: Something Else!
June 25, 2011

If, during the opening strains of your DVD copy of “Malcolm X," you stop eating popcorn mid-munch, that's just fine with trumpeter Terence Blanchard. His original score for the 1991 Spike Lee film was designed to be anything but background music. Melancholy then snap-bean jazz and then jack-boot ominous, his score can only be described as huge: “Spike told me he wanted a large sound," Blanchard told me. And there was only one way to get it: Guest performers, and ...

Sunny Murray Meets Sonic Liberation Front on High Two CD

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards
June 25, 2011

The student of the music we call jazz at some point must come to terms with the impact of the avant-garde from the '60s onwards. Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler, later John Coltrane, and the musicians who associated with him brought about a vast infusion of musical vocabulary and ways of speaking into improvisational practice. Looking back we can see that regardless of the rhetoric let lose in the years that followed, the innovations of these important artists have ...

Buddy Holly Reconsidered

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers
June 24, 2011

Today in the Wall Street Journal (go here) I review Rave OnBuddy Holly, an album that will be released this coming Tuesday. It pairs 19 contemporary and established rock artists with songs associated with rock's least-known and most misunderstood founder. The result is expressionistic and interpretive, much in the way that If I Were a Carpenter (A&M) was when the CD was released in 1994. On that album, artists like the Cranberries, Sheryl Crow and Cracker took a shot at ...

Nate Wooley Keeps On Getting Better: "(Put Your) Hands Together"

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards
June 23, 2011

With Nate Wooley, and with his latest quintet album (Put Your) Hands Together (Clean Feed CF218CD), there is plenty to suggest that growth is a factor. Nate as an artist, trumpet-composer-bandleader, does not stand still. It's a very balanced album with a band that provides the freewheeling solo work you would expect from Nate's outfit, yet also has developed an ensemble sound, thanks in part to Nate's compositions-arrangements, but also thanks to the sensibilities of the players involved. Some of ...
