Violinist Duane Padilla releases debut solo album Sentimental Swing (Honolulu, HI) On June 1, 2011, Violinist Duane Padilla released his debut solo album entitled “Sentimental Swing." Inspired by the lyricism of Frank Sinatra and the eternally optimistic melodies of French jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli, the album presents a selection of romantically swinging jazz improvisations based on classics from The Great American Song Book. Honolulu Symphony Violinist Duane Padilla stumbled into Honolulu's jazz scene very much by accident. “After Symphony rehearsal ...

Title track garnering radio spins ahead of the jazz/R&B keyboardists August 9th album release Upper Marlboro, MD : Although he appears on the album cover wearing a tuxedo with a bowtie, keyboardist Jeff Logans forthcoming Black Tie Affair is far from a stuffy, extravagant and exclusive soire. Everyone is invited to enjoy the irresistibly charming, jazzy R&B collection that humbly serves an endless feast of soul-nourishing melodies. Francois Carrier Trio + 1 with Bobo Stenson, "Entrance 3", Entrances

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards
June 29, 2011

Francois Carrier has style. He keeps a balance between sound, linear content and expressivity in ways that are original and enlivening. When he gathered his alto, his trio and guest Bobo Stenson on piano at the Vancouver Jazz Fest in 2002, there was some magic in the air. It's captured on Entrance 3 (Ayler 106) and captured well. One thing, at least, is clear. Francois Carrier needs to be paid more attention. This is a freely expansive set of extended ...

Pat Metheny and Ornette Coleman - Song X (1986; Reissue)

Source: Something Else!
June 29, 2011

By Mark Saleski Sorta like Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, Pat Metheny and Ornette Coleman's Song X has long been a strange attractor for all sorts of hyperbole, rumor-mongering and dismissal. Yeah, Song X was nothing but a slap in Geffen's face (despite it being Pat's first release on that label) or ... it's the best thing Pat has ever recorded. Oh, by the way, it's the worst too. Sure, depending on your point of view, this may very well ...

Michael Franks - Time Together (2011)

Source: Something Else!
June 29, 2011

You don't see me cover a lot of jazz vocalist or smooth jazz records, so you may wonder what is up with this piece about a record from smooth jazz's premier vocalist, Michael Franks? When I informed our own Mark Saleski my intention to cover Franks his reaction was to disgusted “ewwwww!" but that didn't faze me one bit. I've already long ago admitted that Franks' music was a guilty pleasure of mine, so it's not like I'm going to ...

Splice - Lab (Loop Records 2011) ****

Source: Free Jazz by Stef Gijssels
June 29, 2011

By Joe Higham It seems that jazz and more open ended forms of music are alive and well in the UK, or at least that's the impression I get form a recent glut of albums I've been listening to. Here's another excellent release from the Loop Collective label featuring this fine group known as 'Splice.' If you follow the UK jazz scene the names of Fincker, Bonney and Smith need no introduction, however Pierre Alexandre Tremblay was a new name ...
