Barcelona Holiday: Some Hip Piano Trio Music from Sperrazza-Sacks-Kamaguchi

Barcelona Holiday: Some Hip Piano Trio Music from Sperrazza-Sacks-Kamaguchi

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards

If you dig a modern piano-bass-drums trio playing in a free-bop zone, Barcelona Holiday (Fresh Sound New Talent 373) will get you feeling happy. The session came about while Jacob Sacks (piano), Masa Kamaguchi (bass) and Vinnie Sperrazza (drums) were gigging in Barcelona. They were obviously ready to record and Fresh Sound was there to give them a studio date. Barcelona Holiday finds the trio tackling some familiar and less-familiar classics: Thad Jones' “Three in One," Monk's “Ugly Beauty," Parker's ...

Michael Benedict and Bopitude (Planet Arts, 2011)

Michael Benedict and Bopitude (Planet Arts, 2011)

Source: Music and More by Tim Niland

Taking some of the best jazz compositions of the mid 1950's to mid 1960s hard bop movement and placing them into a more modern context, drummer Michael Benedict leads an exciting band called Bopitude which consists of Bruce Barth on piano, Chris Pasin on trumpet, Brian Patneaude on saxophones and Mike Lawrence on bass. There is a nice mix of bebop and hard bop including classy versions of Blue Note era classics like the Dexter Gordon favorite 'Cheesecake," a nice ...

Julia Hülsmann Trio - Imprint (2011)

Source: Something Else!

German pianist Julia Hülsmann has made her mark with trio jazz fronted with a vocalist, either male or female, but had returned to the instrumental three when she signed up with ECM and recorded her first album with them, The End Of A Summer (2008). Now comes the follow-up three years later with Imprint. Hülsmann is accomplished as both an interpreter and a composer in her own right, but for this album she generously provides space for contributions from her ...

One Track Mind: Rick Stone Trio, "Ballad for Very Sad and Very Tired Lotus Eaters" (2011)

One Track Mind: Rick Stone Trio, "Ballad for Very Sad and Very Tired Lotus Eaters" (2011)

Source: Something Else!

Rick Stone picks more obvious standards elsewhere on his forthcoming release, Fractals. There is Victor Young's “Stella by Starlight," given a vampy album-opening 7/4 intro; and a lush take on Jerome Kern's “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes." Stone even swings his way through a seven-and-a-half minute version of Jimmy Van Heusen's “Darn That Dream." But it is here, on an update of his rarely heard tune from Duke Ellington collaborator Billy Strayhorn, that Stone does his best interpretative work. Beginning ...

Australian jazz artist Wayne Jones walks on "Saturday Street" with spine-tingling bass lines

Source: Lauren Rogers

It is paved with spiky, spine-tingling bass lines, the Saturday Street that Australian jazz artist Wayne Jones walks on. Saturday Street, Jones' latest album, is a glistening summer soundtrack that bathes in the pulsating energy of city life, from sun-drenched strolling to a midnight slow jam at a club. On the title track Jones' bass feels like a living entity; it throbs with vigor and swagger while jumpy piano adds further electricity. The forcefulness of Jones' bass playing is easily ...
