Mathias Eick - Skala (2011)

Mathias Eick - Skala (2011)

Source: Something Else!

Mathias Eick's warm, pure trumpet tone sounding almost like a brassier counterpart to fellow Norwegian Jan Garbarek makes Eick a perfect addition to the Scandinavian squadron of the ECM army. Skala follows by three years his debut, also on ECM, The Door. Eick had already recorded for the label as a sideman, including Manu Katché's excellent Playground album, his distinctive trumpet being a major component of Katché's sonic character for that standout album. Skala is electric music, but lightly so. ...

Pat Metheny Group - The Way up (2005)

Pat Metheny Group - The Way up (2005)

Source: Something Else!

By Mark Saleski Much like those pointless negative reviews where the writer (read: attacker) has never liked the band in question, I sometimes wonder if maybe it's just not right to go on about my favorite artists. Let's face it, I own just about every recording Pat Metheny has ever produced. Solo records. Sideman projects. Film music. Soundtrack singles. Group albums. So, is it possible for an uber-fan such as myself to deal with a new Metheny composition in an ...

Irvin Mayfield - A Love Letter to New Orleans (2011)

Irvin Mayfield - A Love Letter to New Orleans (2011)

Source: Something Else!

Putting together a luxe coffee-table book honoring the city of his birth clearly got Irvin Mayfield in a nostalgic mood. Those unfamiliar with Mayfield's intriguing blend of Afro-Cuban and straight-ahead jazz with island and Mardi Gras Indian polyrhythms are the beneficiaries, as Mayfield also compiled a greatest-hits CD of his work under the same title—A Love Letter to New Orleans. The album, issued by the Crescent City's Basin Street Records, includes seven tracks highlighting his time with Los Hombres Calientes—a ...

Art Farmer and Jim Hall

Art Farmer and Jim Hall

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

After Jim Hall's dynamic and experimental work as a member of the Jimmy Giuffre 3 in the mid- and late '50s, the guitarist became an in-demand partner of small-group leaders. This period in the early '60s began with Sonny Rollins' The Bridge and What's New (January and April 1962, respectively), continuing with Bill Evans on Undercurrent and Interplay (April and July 1962). Then came Gary Burton's Something's Coming (August 1963) and a series of albums with Paul Desmond. One small-group ...

Take a Fun and Funky Trip with Patrick Cooper Back to "The Way It Used to be"

Take a Fun and Funky Trip with Patrick Cooper Back to "The Way It Used to be"

Source: Great Scott P.R.oductions

Critics, radio and record buyers already aboard the keyboardists jazz-funk train Upper Marlboro, MD: People are feeling the new album from keyboardist Patrick Cooper, who today released The Way It Used To Be, a modern collection of vintage jazz-funk and melodic R&B grooves that he wrote and produced to pay homage to the halcyon days of the 1970s when free-form jazz mingled with R&B, soul and funk. Enthusiastic reviews, radio play and pre-release record sales are positive indicators that Coopers ...

Fire with Jim O'Rourke - Unreleased (Rune Grammofon, 2011)

Fire with Jim O'Rourke - Unreleased (Rune Grammofon, 2011)

Source: Music and More by Tim Niland

When I read about this interesting collaboration on Stef's blog, it seemed like something different to check out. And different it is, with an interesting combination of free-form jazz and progressive rock that makes for a heady mixture. Fire! Is a collective consisting of Mats Gustafsson on saxophones, Fender Rhodes electric piano and electronics, Johan Berthling on electric bass and Andreas Werliin on drums. Joining them is the iconoclastic musician and producer Jim O'Rourke, who has worked with everyone from ...

Tim Kuhl - Doomsayer (2011)

Tim Kuhl - Doomsayer (2011)

Source: Something Else!

Tim Kuhl's website greets visitors with a set of simple sentences describing who he is: “Drummer+Composer," followed by “Bandleader, Sideman, Collaborator, Noise Maker, Rocker." Tim is succinct and up-front about describing himself, but the term that's most telling—aside from the obvious “drummer+composer" part—is “Noise Maker." “Noise" has negative connotations in most contexts, but within the realm of improvised music that Kuhl often likes to operate within, it's exactly what I would think he'd want to be known for. “Music," at ...
