Leonardo la Peruta Quartet - The Emotional Touch (2011)

Source: Something Else!
July 21, 2011

Leonardo La Peruta begins The Emotional Touch with a series of skillful runs on the saxophone, almost like a call to arms. “Desperate in Blue" eventually settles into a lithe rhythm signature, but not before La Peruta has served notice: His is a talent boasting skill, precision and some serious swing. As “Desperate" concludes, with pianist David Lenker following close behind the Spaniard's impressive runs, the stage is set for a versatile tour de force. Each of the songs, save ...

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards
July 20, 2011

Anyone who has followed the career of Cuba's pianistic dynamo Gonzalo Rubalcaba no doubt has some favorite recordings they especially like of his. Since his wider exposure as an artist to the world there have been many very good and some great ones. But to my knowledge there has been nothing that compares with his recent CD Faith (5 Pasion). It's solo piano all the way. It is a very intimate performance. You feel like you have dropped in on ...

Joe Morris and Agusta- Ferna Ndez - Ambrosia (Riti Records, 2011) ****

Source: Free Jazz by Stef Gijssels
July 20, 2011

By Paul Acquaro This guitar and piano duo album from Joe Morris and Agustí Fernández is an outing by like minded improvisors, happily extending the definition of melody and the physical limitations of their respective instruments. Between rich acoustic tones they scratch and pluck in unintended places, creating rhythm and melody in adventurous ways. The series of improvisations begin with “Ambrosia 1," which finds Fernández delivering fleeting phrases on the keys while Morris, reacting, provides counter argument via his fretboard. ...

Source: Terri Hinte Publicity
July 20, 2011

Pianist, composer, bandleader, and educator Armen Donelian has carved out an enviable career spanning four decades, including seminal stints with Sonny Rollins, Billy Harper, Chet Baker, and Mongo Santamaria. His new album Leapfrog, his ninth release for Sunnyside, due for release September 13, should go a long way in rectifying his relatively unsung status as an improvising artist of the highest order. Working with an exceptional band comprised of Dutch tenor saxophonist Marc Mommaas, guitarist Mike Moreno, veteran bassist Dean ...

Gutbucket - Flock (Cuneiform, 2011)

Source: Music and More by Tim Niland
July 19, 2011

Another band that skirts the divide between jazz and rock 'n' roll is the Brooklyn based outfit Gutbucket, whose intricate jazz based arrangements are infused with punk rock energy. Gutbucket consists of Ty Citerman on guitar, Eric Rockwin on bass, Ken Thomson on saxophones and Adam Gold on drums. Gutbucket's music isn't as much based around the traditional improvisational nature of jazz as tightly wound arrangements and strong powerful music that hits with a visceral wallop. In a sense this ...
