Ivo Perelman Quartet - The Hour of the Star (2011)

Source: Something Else!
September 12, 2011

Sao Paulo-born tenor man Ivo Perelman assembles a whack jazz quartet that rivals in star power to the foursome David S. Ware recently assembled with William Parker, Cooper-Moore and Muhammad Ali. But Perelman's six improvised performances with Matthew Shipp (piano), Joe Morris (acoustic bass) and Gerald Cleaver (drums) come off much better. With this being free jazz, it's often hard to pinpoint why, but perhaps Perelman found a more inspired combination that day. It certainly sounds that way on the ...

Matt Geraghty Project - Departures (2011)

Source: Something Else!
September 12, 2011

Bassist Matt Geraghty found the perfect name for his new contemporary jazz release, since Departure moves so very far outside of the expectations for labels like “contemporary jazz." Geraghty opens with a short instrumental piece featuring Ramesh Misra on the sarangi, a bowed stringed instrument from North India, before a gentle piano interlude from Misha Tsiganov seems to point back toward more familiar waters. Not so fast: Ara Dinkjian leaps to the fore with turns on the cumbus and oud, ...

Jazzwax List: Detective Jazz

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers
September 11, 2011

In the very late 1950s and early '60s, jazz, TV and the movies merged. During those years, movies and TV shows increasingly featured swinging big band jazz for themes and incidental music—particularly action films and detective shows. The hipper the leading man, the cooler the orchestration. Here are five of my favorites albums of this genre (please feel free to add others to the Comments section):

Complete TV Action Jazz (1959-60)—Mundell Lowe Movie & TV Themes (1962)—Elmer Bernstein  Impact (1959)—Buddy ...

Juanita Fleming - I Come to You (2011)

Source: Something Else!
September 11, 2011

Juanita Fleming uses her stirring life experiences to inform a new gospel-jazz project, I Come To You. Before turning her gift toward God, Fleming's was a life spent around jazz giants, big-budget soundtracks and the stage. Each of those influences finds a place here, propelling the album into a series of brilliant vistas. I Come To You gets underway with an ambitious group of songs, “Africa Suite," each powered by the complex rhythms and interwoven vocals. Fleming, performing in a ...

Tedeschi Trucks Band - Revelator (2011)

Source: Something Else!
September 11, 2011

Ever since Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi married in 2001, the two have frequently contributed to each other projects and performed together. But through (and likely because of) the rigors of The Allman Brothers, The Derek Trucks Band, Tedeschi's own band, and the rigors of raising two kids, they never fully consummated their musical marriage. That is, until now. Tedeschi, a pretty good guitarist and a phenomenal singer and Trucks, a great guitarist and an all-world slide specialist, finally join ...

Mark Hanslip and Javier Carmona - Dosados (Babel Label, 2011) ****a1/2

September 10, 2011

By Joe Higham Mark Hanslip is a name that appears regularly along with Mark Sanders, Paul Dunmall, Mike Hurley, the excellent trio with Olie Brice and Tony Marsh 'Tom-Mix,' and also more recently the splendid Twelves 'Adding Machine,' reviewed here in March 2011. Along with colleague Javier Carmona, another mainstay of the lively UK free scene, the two have been working towards this CD, a much anticipated set of duets, the fruit of regular duo gigs and sessions throughout the ...
