Dan White Releases "Between the Lines"
Source:
Michael Ricci
This month, composer and saxophonist released his self produced album everywhere online. Between The Lines combines two distinct concepts: original compositions and highly stylized covers. The core of the recorded material is a result of Dan White's Quartet winning the 2010 Rochester Jazz Star Competition. The originals are very personal pieces that document the summer of 2010. “Chief Waneta" and “Blue Skies" are written and arranged dedications to White's family. “Fire Blossom" was written during one of White's many visits ...

Terri Hinte Publicity
Tenor saxophonist Michael Pedicin, whose 40-plus-year career has included tours with Dave Brubeck and Maynard Ferguson, has long demonstrated a profound feeling for ballads—those slow, tender songs with lovely melodies that, in the hands of the best purveyors, create a powerful emotional intimacy. On his new CD Ballads... searching for peace, Pedicin focuses on the genre with seven masterful renditions, ranging from a timeless standard to attractive originals and classics of the jazz repertoire. Jemeel Moondoc - Nostalgia in Times Square (Soul Note, 1986)
Source:
Music and More by Tim Niland
Alto saxophonist Jemeel Moondoc, an open thinking veteran of the 1970's jazz loft scene, cut this forward thinking, yet swinging album for the Italian Soul Note label in 1985. Joining him were a powerful crew of William Parker on bass, Dennis Charles on drums, Rahn Burton on piano and Bern Nix on guitar. Despite just being a quintet, the group was able to achieve a much bigger sound than their size indicated, allowing them to perform a beautiful version of ...

Gary Burton: Common Ground
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
What I love most about Gary Burton's playing is his gentle aggression. You always sense that Gary is putting everything he has into his vibraphone and taking risks to produce exciting ideas. But there's a cat's-paw tenderness, too, that provokes thinking on the part of the listener, and the result always sounds as though Gary were strumming a guitar rather than hitting steel keys. The other consistent quality about Gary's playing is that he swings religiously. All of these qualities ...

Something Else!
By Mark Saleski Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Carter, Jimmie Lunceford, Ella Fitzgerald, Sam Cooke, Sarah Vaughan, Bobby Darin, Julie London, Nancy Wilson, Ray Charles. That's the short list ... of artists that Gerald Wilson has been involved with during his long and storied musical life. A trumpeter, composer, and arranger, Wilson has just about done it all. Heck, he was the musical director for the Redd Foxx Show during the late 1970s. Now that's what I call ...

Jeff Coffin and the Mu'tet - Live! (2011)
Source:
Something Else!
Saxophonist and composer Jeff Coffin, a three-time Grammy winner, traverses a fine line on Live!, a record that feels both timeless and fresh. The beauty is that he and his Mu'Tet don't stumble into the pitfalls of either concept. That is to say, Live sounds old without feeling prosaic, and new without feeling too professorial. Coffin, a member of the Dave Matthews Band since 2008 who previously had a 14-year stint in Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, recorded Live! in ...
