Great Scott P.R.oductions
Grammy winning saxophonists reimaged take on the Coltrane/Hartman collaboration will be released on Valentines Day Memphis, TN: Most artists would be daunted at the thought of remaking a classic work of art made by legends, but not Grammy winner Kirk Whalum. The multidimensional saxophonist adeptly steps into the role of John Coltrane and tapped his brother, vocalist Kevin Whalum, to fill the shoes of Johnny Hartman on an unabashedly romantic collection of duets originally recorded in 1963 by the seminal ...

Jim Hobbs Launches Aych on Relative Pitch Records
Source:
Chris Rich
Relative Pitch Records couldn't be a prouder papa at the birth of its brand new release, As the Crow Flies from Aych, a trio dedicated to the potential for 'porch music' and the role of the letter 'H' in a surname. Thus we have a subtle, wry and sly convergence of guitarist Mary Halvorson and cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum with the irrepressible alto saxophonist Jim Hobbs for deepest delvings into the potentials of porch music the world has yet seen. ...

Maynard Ferguson on Cameo
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Most Maynard Ferguson fans consider his years on the Roulette label (from 1958 to 1962) to be his finest big band recordings. They are ferocious on every level—from stampeding arrangements to spectacular musicianship by sections and soloists. But Ferguson's two records for Cameo that followed in 1963 come close. Both albums have just been reissued by Abkco on a two-fer set, and they pick up musically where Ferguson's Roulette output left off. [Photo: Maynard Ferguson at the Newport Jazz Festival ...

El Intruso's "Other Music" Picks for 2011
Source:
JazzINK by Andrea Canter
With so many year-end polls, it's hard to keep track and even harder to make sense of the range of opinion from critics and consumers. And many would argue, what difference does it make anyway? Everyone has his or her opinion, and in music, it's all about personal tastes. What appeals to me might not appeal to you. Ellington tried to make it easy by suggesting music falls only into two categories—good and everything else. Still, some of these polls ...
