Pepper Adams + Zoot Sims

JazzWax by Marc Myers
On December 11 and 12, 1968, three different styles of jazz converged in one New York recording studio—and the result was flammable. The session leader was baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams [pictured above], who was paired for the first and only time with tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims. The little-known album would be called Encounter! (Prestige), and the rhythm-section featured Tommy Flanagan (piano), Ron Carter (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums). The three divergent styles present were hard bop (Adams), swing (Sims) and ...

Artists Recording Collective + the ARC Record Label
Swinging, soulful, energetic, gifted, flawless, these are just some of the words that have been used by critics to describe Connecticut based guitarist Dan Arcamone. A diverse player, Arcamone is equally at home creating arcing melodies on a ballad as he is taking the reins on a burning, rock-fused solo, qualities that have caused him to make waves as ...

"Fromage" is Atlanta-based pianist/composer Randy Hoexter's second recording as a leader, following his highly-regarded debut Radiant. Inspired by The River, Herbie Hancock's tribute to Joni Mitchell, Randy chose to do a collection of cover songs, with the intent of re-inventing familiar material. However, instead of selecting deep and poetic material such as Mitchell's, Randy decided to take on the arguably greater challenge of cheesy" pop songs. Once this concept was established, Randy interviewed many of his fellow musicians, did research, ...

Ella Fitzgerald and Bill Doggett

JazzWax by Marc Myers
By the fall of 1961, Ella Fitzgerald's recordings were sounding a bit processed and predictable. Throughout the late 1950s and into the very early '60s, the singer's studio sessions were becoming cookie-cuttera Los Angeles studio and arrangements by Hollywood stalwarts Nelson Riddle, Billy May and Frank De Vol. But then in January 1962, Fitzgerald recorded one of her finest albumsRhythm Is My Business (Verve), a session arranged by organist Bill Doggett and recorded in New York.
