Source:
Will Goble
Featuring Marcus Printup, trumpet, Chad Eby, Saxophones, Austin Johnson, piano, and Dave Potter, drums, Will Goble's first effort as a leader explores swing, group interaction, and diverse rhythms and feelings within the eleven included tracks. Will's writing is not overly cluttered or ornamented, but concise and clear, with a focus on strong melodic statements. Eby and Printup shine through out; their solos and dialogue bring an aspect of storytelling to the forefront of each song, with ample support from Potter, ...

Bill Jennings: 'Enough Said'
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Like many musicians who weren't pure jazz players but had to earn a living in the 1950s, guitarist Bill Jennings spent much of his all-too brief career in R&B bands. When he did drift into jazz, it was often with groove crossover artists like organist Brother" Jack McDuff and tenor saxophonist Willis Gator" Jackson. Guitarists like Jennings were solid riff-'n'-pickin' players who could keep swinging time and solo with pronounced lines. Many R&B guitarists like Tiny Grimes, Carl Hogan and ...

Clifton Anderson: Carrying On
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Trombonist Clifton Anderson's uncle is Sonny Rollins. Which is neither here nor there, since Clifton never brings it up. But the connection is important because it helps explain Clifton's drive and determination to make a jazz statement. He knows there's history at stake, even though making a mark isn't particularly easy these days. Jazz gigs are harder to come by, and the trombone is among the least sexy of the instruments most people associate with the art form. [Photo above ...

On the evening of October 31, 1965, pianist Lennie Tristano performed solo at the Tivoli Gardens Concert Hall in Copenhagen. The event was captured for Danish television using multiple camera angles. Several additional Tristano concert performances were recorded on the same tour of Scandinavia and Europe. And that was it. "Steppin' Back," New CD Due October 23, Introduces Bay Area Trumpeter/Composer Joel Behrman
Source:
Terri Hinte Publicity
When Joel Behrman relocated to the Bay Area in 2000, the trumpeter/composer was intent on renewing his commitment to jazz. He’d completed his music degree at the University of Miami and worked a series of non-jazz gigs, in clubs and on the road, and as he continued his years of dues-paying in California he realized that, in jazz, the fundamental things apply: swing, the blues, connecting with the audience. On his superb new debut recording, Steppin’ Back, Behrman and his ...
