Maria Bacardi: "Deseo"

JazzWax by Marc Myers
Cuban boleros are a specialty all to themselves. Performed well, they are languid ballads with stories illustrating love gone wrong. To be convincing, a bolero requires a voice with a humid, husky timbre and a feeling that neatly combines grief and guarded optimism. The greats always sound shattered by a lost love but hopeful that tomorrow will bring fresh happiness. Among the finest female practitioners of the Cuban bolero have been Olga Guillot, Omara Portuando, Graciela Perez Grillo and Maria ...

Aaron Diehl: Trio and Quartet
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
I spent the day yesterday writing and listening to pianist Aaron Diehl's new album, The Bespoke Man's Narrative (Mack Ave.). I love Diehl's chord voicings and acute sense of drama. In his playing, you can hear the suspense of Red Garland and patience of Ahmad Jamal. And yet he sounds like himself. Diehl's trio here features David Wong on bass and Rodney Green on drums—with vibraphonist Warren Wolf joining on seven tracks. No one is in a hurry, which is ...

50 years ago bossa nova" was a term barely known beyond Brazil, until in 1963 Jazz Samba, the milestone recording by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd, took the world by storm. In popularizing the seductive, syncopated bossa" rhythm, it became the only jazz album in history to reach #1 on the Billboard pop chart in March 1963. It ranks as one of the biggest selling jazz albums of all time and brought Brazilian composers such as Antonio Carlos Jobim to ...

Dubbed Out in Bucharest: Mahala Rai Banda’s Balkan Reggae
Source:
Chris M. Slawecki
When Romania’s Romany pop supergroup Mahala Rai Banda set cimbaloms skanking a few years ago on “Balkan Reggae,” reggae DJs around Europe perked up and started dropping the track into their sets. It was merely a matter of time before the obvious next step came. In honor of Jamaica’s 50 years of independence in 2012, Mahala Rai Banda reached out to Caribbean-inspired remixers. The result: Balkan Reggae Remixed (Asphalt Tango). A diverse crew of producers added their stamp to the ...
