Bill Miller: Robbie Williams
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
To the best of my knowledge, pianist Bill Miller, who accompanied Frank Sinatra for more than 50 years, never recorded an album under his own name. He led a sextet in the early 1960s, but only while accompanying Sinatra on tour. In interviews prior to his death in 2006, Miller intimated that he occasionally played gigs in Los Angeles clubs, but he never mentioned recording an album either as a leader or as part of a small group. As a ...

Marion Williams: Packin' Up
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
If you track the tenor saxophone back to the artist who did the most to change the instrument's direction—transforming it from a mannered, slippery reed to a bossy, solo voice—you'll wind up on the doorstep of Coleman Hawkins. If you do the same with gospel, you will discover Marion Williams, who in the late 1940s began turning the church vocal into an expressive and individual virtuoso form. Her astonishing delivery would have a significant influence on male and female R&B ...

CD Release: Aaron Aranita Big Band "Rough Jazz"
Source:
Frank Moten
Jazz, naturally, has a rich and varied history but it could be argued that it misplaced a little something on its way to becoming a Respected Art Form. Not to imply that jazz shouldn’t be taken seriously, but there is such a thing as taking a thing too seriously. Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie are among the music’s most important artists ever but they never shied away from being entertainers—aside from musical excellence, they ...

Al Cohn: Rifftide, June 1986
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
A year and a half before Al Cohn's death of liver cancer in Feb. 1988, the tenor saxophonist was on tour in Europe. In June 1986, he was in Monster, the Netherlands, recording Rifftide with Dutch jazz musicians Rein de Graaff (p) Koos Serierse (b) Eric Ineke (d) at Studio 44 for the Timelss label. It's one of the finest albums of Cohn's late period and a document that marvelously illustrates what made Cohn special. Cohn was a powerful post-war ...

Johnny Mathis: The Singles
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
For some reason, when talk turns to male pop singers of the 1950s and '60s, Johnny Mathis is almost always skipped over. There's plenty of chatter on the merits of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr., Andy Williams and others but few words in praise of Mathis. In fact, one could argue that he's nearly forgotten today. Perhaps it's because he didn't record in the jazz-swing tradition. Or perhaps his renditions were too sweet and sincere. ...
