The Security Project, featuring members of King Crimson, Shriekback and Peter Gabriel's original band bring the genre-less masterpieces of Peter Gabriel into the 21st Century on their new live album Live 1. Seattle-based Trey Gunn and Michael Cozzi join esteemed drummer Jerry Marotta and NY keyboardist David Jameson to harness the core of these songs. Added to the pedigree of these players is the voice of Brian Cummins, whose interpretations add haunting authenticity to the immaculate arrangements. These live recordings ...

ECM Records Releases Jack DeJohnette's "In Movement"
Source:
Universal Music Enterprises
Jack DeJohnette (drums, piano, electronic percussion) Ravi Coltrane (tenor, soprano and sopranino saxophones ) Matthew Garrison (electric bass, electronics) “A trio of compatible ideals. Featuring Ravi Coltrane on saxophones and Matt Garrison on electric bass, it’s both earthy and elastic, capable of sneaking in and out of song form, disinclined to rush toward resolution.” –Nate Chinen, The New York Times There is a lot of history concentrated in Jack DeJohnette’s adventurous new trio. Fifty years ago, as a guest with ...

French Guitars Unlimited
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
In 1966, French guitarist Francis Le Maguer formed a quartet of electric guitars known as the Barclay Stars. The group, named for the French Barclay record label, included Le Maguer, Paul Piguillem, Pierre Cullaz, Raymond Gimenes, Victor Apicella and other players at different points and on different album tracks. At times, the group was expanded to a quintet. By my count, the Barclay Stars released three albums in the late 1960s. The group's first album was called Guitars Unlimited, and ...

Miles Davis: Musings of Miles
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Admittedly, I'm a Miles Davis purist when it comes to his mid-1950s recordings. This means I'm not especially big on Davis in crowds. I find his sessions with vibes, trombones and saxophones unnecessarily choked and distracting from the essential beauty and lyricism of his horn. I even feel that John Coltrane's tenor saxophone is often overwrought and claustrophobic on these mid-1950s dates. For me, perfection is Davis with just a trio. For whatever reason, Davis recorded only three quartet sessions ...

Miles Davis: Milan, 1964
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
On Oct. 11, 1964, the Miles Davis Quintet was in Milan performing at the Teatro Dell'Arte. The quintet at that time consisted of Davis (tp), Wayne Shorter (ts), Herbie Hancock (p), Ron Carter (b) and Tony Williams (d). The last full song they played was Victor Feldman's Joshua, which Feldman had written for Miles Davis's Seven Steps to Heaven in 1963. It should be noted that Hancock was 24 during this Milan performance, having replaced pianist Feldman a year earlier ...

French Saxophone Duet Group Bi-Ki ? Release "Quelque chose au milieu" on Circum-Disc
Source:
Peter Orins
Created in 2012, the saxophone duet Bi-Ki ? shows and questions the meeting of two sound identities and two personal paths around the same instrument. In concert situation, usually in the middle of the audience, the duet sculpts a sound material that draws on the acoustic resources of the place they play in. Two voices mix, follow and avoid each other, exploring all the possibilities of the instrument, the density of the timbre as its fragility, and playing with the ...
