Mike LeDonne: It's All Your Fault
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Mike LeDonne is one funky organist. Three cups of Charles Earland, two tablespoons of Jimmy McGriff with liberal dashes of Don Patterson. Then cook. Mike's Philly sound is always groovy and driving but not overdone. That's the thing about organ albums. You have to know when it's enough, and Mike knows. The beauty of his music is that it respects tradition and drips with '70s swagger. Mike's latest is It's All Your Fault (Savant). Recorded in February 2020, just weeks ...

Herb Ellis & Remo Palmier: Windflower
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
In the 1970s, Concord recorded many great jazz albums, especially ones by guitarists. Back in 2010, I posted on Barney Kessel's Soaring, which has long been a favorite. Another Concord winner is Herb Ellis and Remo Palmier's Windflower, a perfect album released in 1978. The two guitarists were backed by George Duvivier on bass and Ron Traxler on drums. Elllis was best known as a member of the Oscar Peterson Trio from 1953 to 1958. He also composed Detour Ahead ...

Famed Vocalist Roseanna Vitro Releases 'Sing A Song Of Bird Feat. Sheila Jordan, Bob Dorough, Marion Cowings
Source:
Mouthpiece Music
Vocalist Roseanna Vitro is a favorite among jazz aficionados and musicians alike. That’s why Cedar Walton has said, “Roseanna Vitro, one of my favorite vocalists, sings with a great feeling for jazz. Her readings on major compositions are monumental.” Her outsized talents and passion for the music are matched only by the generosity of her spirit, which shines beautifully on her newest recording Sing a Song of Bird, a celebration of the great and inimitable Charlie Parker. Vitro conceived this ...

Lucy Yeghiazaryan and Vanisha Gould
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
One of the most compelling and ambitious jazz vocal albums of the year is In Her Words, a new recording by vocalists Lucy Yeghiazaryan and Vanisha Gould. Like a number of jazz albums this year, this one joyfully steers clear of the American songbook—a dusty and lazy resource for true jazz singers of 2021. Six of the 12 songs are by Gould and one is by Lucy (who arranged five). The remaining five songs are by other composers, including Nobody's ...

Drummer Robert Castelli Releases 'Party At One World Plaza'

Robert Castelli
Released during lockdown, Party at One World Plaza continues to garner great reviews and continued radio play on podcasts, internet and traditional radio in Europe, the U.K., Canada and the USA. A drummer and bandleader who writes the music for the band, Castelli says he's trying to motivate the drumming community to be more musical, come out from behind the kit, lead a band and yes, even compose music. Here's just some of what is being said by journalists. “As ...
