Alvin Queen: Night Train to Copenhagen
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
I missed this album when it came out last year, but I want you to know about it now in case you missed it, too. Alvin Queen is a superb drummer with a beautiful, sentimental touch on sticks and brushes. Born in the Bronx, Queen lived in Canada in the 1970s and then relocated to Switzerland in 1979, where he created the Nilva record label, an anagram of his first name. On his most recent album, Night Train to Copenhagen ...

Scott Thompson Public Relations
Since her captivating debut in 2009, jazz vocalist Sylvia Brooks has displayed a gift for inhabiting different personas, with a subspecialty in film-noir inspired femmes fatale. On this—Signature (Rhombus Records)—her fourth album, she embraces the most challenging role of all, defining herself with a set of beautifully crafted original songs. Her evocative lyrics and emotionally direct delivery imbue the music with hard-won authenticity. Whether looking back with wry affection on her walk-on-the-wild-side youth or lamenting a lost love, Brooks brings ...

Tenor saxophonist-flutist Jean Fineberg puts the icing on the cake of a 50-year career with the April 8 release of Jean Fineberg & JAZZphoria on her Pivotal Records imprint. True Stories, his fourth album, shows the breadth of his musicality and inventive compositional style. Eight original tracks (and one cover) were inspired by a wide range of influences, drawing on themes from composers such as Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and Igor Stravinsky. The result: a unique expression of jazz linking past to present. Wade’s ...

Shorty Rogers: Chances Are It Swings
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Trumpeter and flugelhornist Shorty Rogers first recorded for RCA in 1952 as Boots Brown and His Blockbusters. The four sides for two RCA 45s were honking instrumentals with a strong backbeat. According to my 2013 interview with Dave Pell, who was on the '53 session, the Boots Brown dates were for movies. “But then RCA released them as singles," said Dave. “I don’t know why—maybe to make a double profit or to feed the pipeline for its new 45-rpm format. ...
