Carla Bley - Carla's Christmas Carols.

Carla Bley - Carla's Christmas Carols.

Source: ECM Records

On November 3rd, ECM released its very first CD of Christmas music! Carla Bley, one of jazz's greatest arrangers, turns her attention this time to a delightful collection of traditional and non-traditional seasonal fare which she's titled: Carla's Christmas CarolsChristmas music has been an enthusiasm of Carla Bley's for decades, and the pieces she has chosen here are subjected to her offbeat wit and idiosyncratic arranging skills. Selections include “O Tannenbaum", “Away In A Manger", “God Rest Ye ...

Tom Talbert: Bix, Duke, Fats

Tom Talbert: Bix, Duke, Fats

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

I tend to avoid tribute albums. Barring a handful of gems, among them Louis Armstrong's salutes to Fats Waller and W.C. Handy, most miss the mark because they try too hard to one-up or mimic the subject of their adulation. One of the rare exceptions is Tom Talbert's Bix, Duke, Fats. Recorded in 1956 for Atlantic Records, the album features dynamic arrangements by Talbert for three different studio groups that included trumpeters Joe Wilder and Nick Travis, alto saxophonist Herb ...

Recent Listening: Kurt Rosenwinkel

Recent Listening: Kurt Rosenwinkel

Source: Rifftides by Doug Ramsey

Kurt Rosenwinkel, Reflections (Wommusic). From his first recordings in the 1990s, Rosenwinkel's guitar playing has had an element of pensiveness. Regardless of tempo, complexity or adrenalin-fueled collaborators, he radiates the air of a man who won't hurry through even his most complex improvisations. Rosenwinkel's assurance and thoughtfulness are consistent in this set of standards, jazz classics and one original. Bassist Eric Revis and drummer Eric Harland are capable of speed and intensity, but here they are at one with Rosenwinkel's ...
