Moby: Wait For Me

By: Greg Gargiulo

There's no shortage of waiting, but not a whole lot of payoff either on Moby's newest, Wait for Me (Little Idiot/Mute). After slightly stepping out of character to craft his upbeat tribute to the club scene with 2008's Last Night, which proved to be a predominantly successful endeavor, Moby has returned to his ambient roots. Only problem is in his absence the roots have become dry and dull, and the product they've yielded this time lacks enough ...

It's too easy to become jaded with Nirvana, especially if you went to high school or college during the short period they ruled the world in the early 1990s. The rampant manufacturing of Kurt Cobain's image and legacy by mainstream America has been nauseatingly on par with that of Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and Jim Morrison (all of whom also died at the age of 27yes, yes we all know). The double drum contingent produces moments of force, as in the ...

Catching up (Part 3)

Hush Money - Erik Deutsch (Hammer & String Records) - I've seen Erik Deutsch's name on several CDs and have heard him with Charlie Hunter's Trio but, honestly, that did not prepare me for how impressive this recording, his 2nd as a leader, is. If I had heard his 2007 debut, “Fingerprint" (Sterling Circle), his love of melody and instrumental interplay would be no surprise. The rhythm section consists of old friends Jonti Siman (bass), Marc Dalio (drums), and guitarist ...
