Bob Baker's Marionette Theater

Bob Baker's Marionette Theater

Just off of stage right, past a wire rack full of marionettes for “The Nutcracker" and an electrical board laden with wires and knobs, a whiteboard strongly forbids any “diva" behavior and makes Baker's mantra clear. “The puppets are the *s!"

The nearly 50-year-old stage just west of downtown, where the owner crafts most of the puppets, is behind on mortgage payments. But he is determined that the show will go on. Inside, as an elderly man wielded a marionette, ...

Ras Moshe Continues Free Jazz from the Sanctuary

Ras Moshe Continues Free Jazz from the Sanctuary

Source: All About Jazz

Saxophonist Ras Moshe is on the forefront of musicians keeping avant garde jazz urgent and vital. Moshe comes blessed with a jazz pedigree: his grandfather played with Lucky Millinder, Earl Bostic, Ella Fitzgerald, and many others, and his father worked with Carlos Garnett, Stanley Cowell, and other musicians in the new music scene in Brooklyn. As a result, the New York City-based Moshe is well versed in jazz’s past, but he uses his knowledge to envision the future. And he’s ...

Carroll Big Band stands between his 17-piece group and the crowd packed into Sarasota's Bacalao Sports Bar and Grill on a recent Sunday night. The sound of saxophones, trumpets and trombones easily slices through the air briefly before Carroll brings the microphone in his right hand to his lips and belts out ...

Tracking Composers on the Run

Tracking Composers on the Run

Source: Michael Ricci

A beloved song can conjure all manner of associations: a time, a place, a loved one. For Steven Blier, a pianist and the artistic director of the New York Festival of Song, Alexander Zemlinskys Meeraugen suggested a concert.

From that lone spark came Fugitives, a program that Mr. Blier presented with Kate Lindsey, a mezzo-soprano, and Joseph Kaiser, a tenor, at Merkin Concert Hall on Tuesday night.

The overarching theme was the disruption in European music and culture caused by ...
