Liza Minnelli Onstage: Resistance is Futile
Source:
All About Jazz
Liza Minnelli performs Liza's at the Palace," at the historic vaudeville theater in New York City. Liza is still somebody's idea of entertainment. Witness the frenzied scene a few nights ago at Broadway's Palace Theatre, where Liza is doing a one-woman show through Jaunary 4. For one thing, she looks a lot better on a theater stage than she does under the close scrutiny of TV cameras sleeker, steadier, slimmer. The spangly pantsuits flatter her. She sounded better too, at ...

Source:
Michael Ricci
Sounds Mixed and Matched Indo-Pak Coalition, a trio equally grounded in folk tradition and jazz improvisation, proposes a social pact as well a musical ideal. The groups name is partly self-descriptive the alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa is of Indian descent, while the guitarist Rez Abbasi was born in Pakistan but it also carries an underlying message made all the more painfully relevant by events like the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai. Of course it might feel nave or ...

Stanton Moore Trio/Greyhounds :: 11.21.08 :: The Parish :: Austin, TX
Stanton Moore :: 11.21 :: Austin This was one of those nights where I - being of the anxious minded - brought a lot of baggage into the show, from personal worries to the latest news on Marketplace I had heard on my way back from work. But the justifiably enthused crowd that graced Austin's third annual Funkfest as ...

Wayne Shorter Quartet at Disney Hall
Source:
Michael Ricci
The veteran sax man and his combo treat a Disney Hall audience to an improvisational tour de force. Miriam Adam, the clarinetist for Grammy-winning quintet Imani Winds, sounded almost apologetic as she back-introduced the ensemble's first song in its opening set for Wayne Shorter, an evocative, dramatic piece from Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. Clad in a candy-colored gown, she said something along the lines of how Wednesday night's Disney Hall audience wasn't expecting classical woodwind music to lead the way ...

Although several of our town's not-for-profit presenters have already gone into holiday or, in the case of the universities, end-of-semester mode, there's still plenty of live jazz on St. Louis stages this weekend. Let's go to the highlights:Tonight, the very fine pianist Reggie Thomas leads a group featuring trumpeter Anthony Wiggins in a free concert at the Black Cat Theatre in Maplewood. The show will feature the music of Louis Armstrong, and is part of Jazz St. Louis' ...
