All About Jazz
The sign outside the Metro-pole in New York City reads Dixieland. But if signs mean less to you than sounds, and you step inside, what you will hear is jazz. And if its Sunday afternoon or Monday or Tuesday night, it will be some of the best jazz, these or any days.
That is when a quintet led by two timeless masters of the art of jazz holds postgraduate seminars. The language they speak is informed by the past, which ...

All About Jazz
Composer/Pianist Lola Perrin was asked to create a music performance from the work of designer/artist and Puma Creative Director, Hussein Chalayan, who is currently on exhibition at the Design Museum.
She devised a concept to integrate the issues of cultural migration & displacement that inform Chalayan’s work into her compositional process and ran a questionnaire about family histories amongst 300 anonymous Londoners. The answers form a patchwork of tales reflecting the cultural diversity that is London; these tales, and work ...

Half a Beatles reunion, or some approximation of it, took place Saturday night at Change Begins Within, a benefit concert at Radio City Music Hall for the David Lynch Foundation. Paul McCartney was headlining; Ringo Starr was also on the bill, and yes, after letting the anticipation build, the two surviving Beatles did perform together, as they did in 2002 for ...

Bill Frisell's Disfarmer Project at Skirball Center
Source:
Michael Ricci
Long known for merging rustic Americana with atmospheric jazz, Bill Frisell brought to the Skirball Center on Thursday night.
His new Disfarmer Project, a suite of as-yet- untitled compositions intended for a future CD release that are inspired by the American photographer known as Disfarmer.
An eccentric, reclusive man, Disfarmer, born Mike Meyers, became an outsider art figure revered for his stark Depression-era portraits of farmers and families around Heber Springs, Ark. The odd details surrounding his life seem pulled ...

The Wild and Woolly Music of the Shtetl, in All Its Infinite Variety.
The clarinetist David Krakauer, the artistic director of Klezmer All-Star Bash at Carnegie Hall on Thursday, taking the stage to play a number with the Klezmatics, one of the evenings acts.
What comes after a revival? Thats the question that a generation of klezmer-loving, mostly Jewish musicians has been exploring for the last few decades, not least at Klezmer All-Star Bash, a concert on Thursday night at ...

The Slack-Key Guitarist Makana, One Mans New Take On an Old Tradition
Source:
Michael Ricci
Half a dozen songs into his show at the Sage Theater in Times Square on Thursday night, Makana paused for reflection. Somehow, he said, not being of Hawaiian ancestry allowed me to really embrace the artistic side of the culture.
The line felt sincere but well worn; its air of self-reassurance suggested a talisman on a key chain. It also raised the meaningful prospect that Makana, whose birth name is Matt Swalinkavich, came to his music as an outsider.
The ...
