Jazz Phrasing Here, Flamenco Flair There

Jazz Phrasing Here, Flamenco Flair There

Chano Dominguez, the Spanish pianist, came to the Jazz Standard on Saturday with an unusual quartet for a jazz club. From left, there was Mr. Domnguez on piano; Israel Surez, known as Pirana, on a percussion setup designed around the wood box called the cajon; the flamenco singer Blas Cordoba; and Tomas Moreno Romero, known as Tomasito, who deserves his own paragraph. Tomasito is a palmero, with the flamenco-tradition job of clapping through the music’s variously accented 12-beat cycles. He ...

Sampling Barcelonas Jazz Beat

Sampling Barcelonas Jazz Beat

The New York club circuit bears pervasive evidence of this fluidity, especially now. But sometimes its good to get the message in a stronger dose.

Thats one reason the Catalan Jazz Festival, a five-night series at the Jazz Standard, makes sense. As a reflection on the ...

Contemporary Interpretation of Japanese Ghostly Ritual by the Kitsune Ensemble

Contemporary Interpretation of Japanese Ghostly Ritual by the Kitsune Ensemble

Source: All About Jazz

In Edo-era Japan, a popular recreation known as The Gathering of 100 Ghostly Tales involved gathering around candlelight to tell ghost stories. At the conclusion of each story, a candle would be extinguished, until the final story was told in pitch black, and legend held that a ghost would appear in this moment. These Japanese seances were performed by Samurai to test their courage and by peasants to create chills through their bodies on hot summer nights.

New York City’s ...

Keeping It Flexible, Careful Not to Raise a Ruckus

Keeping It Flexible, Careful Not to Raise a Ruckus

The trumpeter John McNeil’s imagination is right on the line between jazz at its most secure and coded and jazz as an open window, letting anything in and out of its house. For the last five years or so he’s been running bands that tend to have a slightly arch repertory concept: the pointed and airy West Coast jazz of the 1950s or the pains and pleasures of the infamous amateur rock band the Shaggs.
