When Irving Berlin composed Blue Skies one has to wonder if Montana was on his mind. Berlin wrote Blue Skies in 1926, it was featured in the first feature-length talkie, The Jazz Singer and became a hit. Montana is known as Big Sky Country because of it's beautiful mountains and healthy terrain, yet topography is not Montana's only attraction. With Montana's rich music and arts scene it can also be called Big Jazz Country. On the heels of the International ...

Steve Kuhn Revisiting an Old Boss Named John Coltrane

Steve Kuhn Revisiting an Old Boss Named John Coltrane

Source: Michael Ricci

The pianist Steve Kuhn can play John Coltranes music meaningfully without sounding as if he lives by it.

That shows self-possession, for a couple of reasons. Coltrane was the most influential jazz musician in the late 1950s and 1960s, when Mr. Kuhn got started. And Mr. Kuhn, now 71, also has something many of his peers dont: a small but significant association with Coltrane on the bandstand.

Power Banjo, Extreme Jazz and a Bit of Twitchy Punk

Power Banjo, Extreme Jazz and a Bit of Twitchy Punk

Source: Michael Ricci

Seabrook Power Plant began and ended its set on Tuesday night at Zebulon, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, with a grimly combative clamor.

Jared Seabrook, the bands drummer, bashed a manhole-cover-size ride cymbal and viciously pummeled his snare; Tom Blancarte clawed at his upright bass with something like frenzied desperation. In the foreground Brandon Seabrook, Jareds brother, was a man apparently hellbent on earning the title of Worlds Least Rustic Banjo Player.

It was all hyper-declarative and a little juvenile, but not ...

They Got the Short End of the (Drum) Stick

They Got the Short End of the (Drum) Stick

Source: All About Jazz

Rock has a history of selling drummers short. Four others overlooked:

Charlie Watts

One of the greatest “feel" drummers in rock, grounded The Rolling Stones with a world-class backbeat and swung with a jazz-informed groove. Get Off of My Cloud, Honky Tonk Women and Satisfaction succeed, in large part, thanks to signature beats conjured by Watts.

Hal Blaine

Blaine laid the foundation for the soundtrack of the '60s in Los Angeles studios with The Beach Boys, the Mamas and the ...
