Concert Review: Doc Severinsen and el Ritmo de la Vida (10/16/2010)

October 25, 2010

One unfortunate phrase that is too often uttered when referring to older jazz musicians who come to town for a concert is “You better go see them now, because you never know if you will have the chance to see them again." While legendary trumpeter and bandleader Doc Severinsen is 83 years old, I find that phrase hardly applicable after seeing him in concert at the Kirkland Performance Center on October 16th. Not only are Doc's chops still in good ...

To those who haven't yet heard him, the delight I and others take in Andy Schumm's playing might seem a bit excessive. “Who is this young whipper-snapper? If he were any good—to paraphrase Larkin's Law of Reissues—I'd have all his Orthophonic Victors in green sleeves by now. There are no entries for ANDY SCHUMM AND HIS SHOOTING STARS in any of my discographies!" Andy has us all waiting for his first—of many—compact disc as a leader. But what he have ...

Gary Burton New Quartet Shifts Ideas and Colors

Source: AAJ Staff
October 21, 2010

The vibraphonist Gary Burton's new quartet has the same shape as an important one he led 43 years ago on the record “Duster": vibes, guitar, bass, drums. He was 24 then and figuring out ways to make jazz an even bigger container of American sound than it already was: it could evoke Chet Atkins and the Byrds and Ornette Coleman and Count Basie and the Modern Jazz Quartet. His ideas from that time are still pinging around, often unacknowledged, which ...

The Lead Sheet: Twin Cities Jazz, October 22-28

October 23, 2010

There's big names hanging out in the Twin Cities this weekend and into the coming week, but perhaps the biggest gig in area jazz is not a musician but a radio station. KBEM, or “Jazz 88," celebrates 40 years on the air, with the past two decades or as a fulltime jazz ("and traffic") station, one of only a handful left in operation in the U.S. The celebration comes at a somewhat anxious time for KBEM, with the recent proposal ...
