Drummer Gerald Cleaver was last in Philadelphia when Ars Nova Workshop hosted the Michael Formanek Quartet in October, and he’ll be returning two more times before the New Year: on December 2 with the Gerald Cleaver Group and on December 12 with Mario Pavone’s Orange Double Tenor. Murcof and Francesco Tristano - London Jazz Festival

Murcof and Francesco Tristano - London Jazz Festival

Source: The Ring Modulator by Adrian Stevenson

Murcof and Francesco Tristano—London Jazz Festival, Queen Eliizabeth Hall, Southbank, London. 16th November 2010 There was promise here for sure. The combination of Fernando Corona aka Murcof's minimalist electronica grace and the idiosynkrasia of 'not'-pianist Francesco Tristano ought to have delivered something special, but I'm not sure it did. Things started promisingly enough with Tristano scattering some deeply reverberated quizzical piano notes. Murcof then faded in a deep bass thrum overlaid with a thin shade of white noise. And, ... ...

Gary Burton Quartet + Scottish National Jazz Orchestra - London Jazz Festival

Gary Burton Quartet + Scottish National Jazz Orchestra—London Jazz Festival, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank, London. 17th November 2010 Following a warm up week in New York, tonight's concert was the first major outing for Gary Burton's new quartet, and compelling stuff it was too, hitting the pocket from the off. As early as the second tune, 'Last Snow,' the band already has us with some deep sensitive playing off the back of its gorgeous melody. Guitarist Julian Lage immediately impressed, ...

Jazz in God's Living Room

Jazz has been considered “the devil's music" at times. More in distant decades and in some places more than others, and even among random people today. But places we don't expect it for one reason or another. So what a pleasant surprise last night ...

The Lead Sheet: Twin Cities Jazz, November 19-25

Highlights, Last Week Kenny Barron, Kenny Barron and Kenny Barron. Not only was his “meet the artist" chat informative and uplifting (see blog, November 13), his quartet gigs in both Iowa City and Minneapolis affirmed the NEA's decision to name him a Jazz Master for 2010. And his bandmates, David Sanchez, Kim Thompson, Kyoshi Kitagawa (Iowa City) and Linda Oh (Minneapolis), truly gilded the lily. The Coming Week This is one of the busiest jazz weekends I can remember since ...
