Shows I'll Never Forget: Bob Dylan, April 21, 1993

October 23, 2011

On this night, Bob Dylan once again proved he was no fan of history. And that's why I've been a fan of his for so long.

See, I've always loved the in-concert head fake. After all, I already own the albums. Alas, showgoers in the modern age want the hits, and they want them note for teeth-splinteringly boring note. My response: You could hardly blame someone for not wanting to play a 25-year-old song the same old way. (In fact, ...

I love my annual treks to northern California but it always seems to coincide with something special, jazz speaking, back home in the Twin Cities. In the past week, I missed the too-infrequent appearance of Patricia Barber (at the Dakota). I heard positive comments about the show. I missed the first performance of the quartet Good Life (Brandon Wozniak, Peter Schimke, Billy Peterson, Kenny Horst) at the Artists Quarter. I heard positive comments about the show. I missed a rare ...

After a week without jazz, I am in recovery. Fortunately there's plenty of opportunities to help me get back on track. Highlights Young drummer and Twin Cities native Matt Slocum has been making as much of an impression on the national jazz scene as a composer as he has with his trapset. One listen to his second recording, After the Storm, should be ample evidence. With long-time bassist Massimo Biolcati and acclaimed pianist Sam Yahel, Slocum brings his trio into ...

How to Promote a Show. You May Not Like What You're About to Read....

Source: HypeBot
October 21, 2011

After having a poorly attended show, it's easy to point the fingers at everyone else. The bottom line: the turn-out is entirely your responsibility. When trying to promote your show, you would expect there to be a team of people to help out: the club, the booker, the other bands, and the promoter. And, yes, they sometimes do help out. However, more times than not, that level of support just isn't there. “How about the other bands on the bill? ...
