Delmark's New Jazz Releases for August

Guitarist Bobby Bromm has been playing professionally fro more than twenty years. He's worked with Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Kenny Burrell, Charles Earland, and Dr. John. “Modern Man" recalls the urgent, smoking energy of George Benson circa 1966's “The Cookbook". Indeed, Fire-breathing britone sax ace Ronnie Cuber and Hammond B-3 marverl Dr. Lonnie Smith-key elements of that ferocious mid-'60's Benson quartet-are both aboard. Drummer Idris Muhammad Brings along his own conversational, New Orleans flavored swing to elevate the proceedings.

Although “Reminiscing: is Jodie's fifth Delmark CD, it is the first to feature Jodie predominantly in trio setting. “These songs are a reflection of my musical heritage and I hope you enjoy your journey into my musical past."

Malachi Thompson “Talking Horns" Feat. Oliver Lake & Hamiet Bluiett DE-532

In the mid '60's the Chicago and St. Louis jazz tradition became embodied in the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in Chicago and Black Artist Group (BAG) in St. Louis. The two collectives were founded on the freedom principle and were dedicated to jazz as a living, vital expression. Oliver Lake and Julius Hemphill facilitated exchanges between the two groups-Lester Bowie, spending time in both locations, the common denominator. “Talking Horns" features AACM trumpeter Malachi Thompson with BAG saxmen Oliver Lake and Hamiet Bluiett.

Kahil El'Zabar /Billy Bang “Spirits Entering" DE-533

Percussionist, drummer Kahil El'Zabar has created an impressive body of recordings with The Ritual Trio and Ethnic Heritage Ensemble. Pharoah Sanders, Archis Shepp, Joseph Jarman and Kalaparusha have recorded with Kahil on Delmark. Billy Bang was a member of the Ritual Trio and returned for “Big Cliff, Live at Underground Fest" (DE-477). Bang has become a hero of the international avant garde, celebrated for the way he's opened up and personalized the voice of his violin-thewarmth he gets from his bluesy bowing and the fires he lights.
